Since the holidays are coming up and these tools and batteries will be on sale for Christmas, I am starting to convert all my outdoor tools to a new 18+ and 40 volt system.

Anyone have any advice on which ones I should pick? The 18 volt and 40 volt systems don't have to be the same maker so give me some advice on what you have used and what you would or wouldn't buy. The easiest answer will be Ryobi from Home Depot so if you have them please give me your input.

I am looking to start will the following.
Blower
Header Trimmer
Multi Tool
Circular Saw
Drill
and any other easy tool that comes in a combo kit.

DeWalt Flex-volt system

Agree. Buy the same brand will save you money in the long run because you can buy bare tools when you add to your collection. Beats the hell out of 4 or 5 different chargers and paying for multiple batteries when you can buy 2.

I can only speak for DEWALT. That being said I have power tools that I use daily running strong for 6 years now. Never clean them and probably don't treat them like I am supposed to. DEWALT Flexvolt is a strong system and the tablesaw is just as powerful as a similar corded and cuts really well. I am currently switching to all cordless and they will be DEWALT. I can't wait to get the new flexvolt track saw.

On 3rd combo set and only one dead tool over last 6/7 years. Like someone said extra batteries is where the cost is, get as many of the same type as you can.
Personally I'm done with Bosch an DeWalt cordless hand tools. One word of caution when comparing tools, make careful note the model, one store (or online) will carry something one letter off and it'll represent something important like amps. Big box stores especially.

Thing about the Flex-volt system is that it can expand to larger tools while using the same 60V batteries; cordless miter saw, table saw, yard equipment, etc. and the same batteries can power lighter 40V/60V tools and all of the existing 20V tools.

Ryobi is fine for most people depending on the amount of use. Just using them occasionally should get the job done. They have the biggest line up of tools that uses the same battery which is nice. Batteries go on sale a couple of times a great too. I've only had 1 battery crap out on me in 4 years.

The price point of Ryobi's make them popular, I think. The drill and circular saws are decent. Blower works good and can also be used with an extension cord. Trimmer blows, because it lacks power and the trimming diameter is small.

I've bought all of my Ryobi stuff from Direct Factory Tools at the Tanger outlet in Gonzales. It's either CPO, reconditioned, or blemished items. Almost half the price with same quality. I do a decent amount of woodworking and home maintenance and haven't had a problem. If I need more power, I opt for corded tools.

I did get a Rigid impact drill from there that I also like, but the battery isn't warrantied like ones you buy from Home Depot. All Rigid batteries are lifetime warranty if you buy from Home Depot and get them registered.

Thanks for the input. I have looked into the Dewalt Flexvolt and it just isn't a fit for me. I am looking for more of everyday handyman stuff that get used once a week instead of everyday.

I am going to go check out all the Makita and Ryobi stuff today at Homedepot.

I got a ten-piece Ryobi 18-Volt set from Home Depot right after Katrina for ridiculously cheap (something like $225) and have been using the shite out of it for twelve years. I like the fact that when they came out with the newer batteries I was able to use them on all my old stuff. I now probably have over twenty Ryobi tools that use the same battery.

As someone above posted, the batteries go on sale a couple of times a year so I always have plenty and I have a charger that fits six at a time.

When Ryobi came out with their 40-volt system I jumped right in and got their weed trimmer and blower. I have been very happy with both. I am thinking about getting their 40-volt mower when the time comes but I might not simply because of the size of my yard.

I have been very happy with my Ryobi tools. Other brands may be better but from my experience you can't go wrong with Ryobi.
