I'm getting my boy his lifetime hunt/fish combo for Christmas. The application says that a hunter safety education number is required for anyone born after 1969. But he's only a year and a half old. How do I apply for him without that?

You can't. He has to take it. My daughter is taking her last class tomorrow. I'll get her lifetime after she finishes. Of course she asked me why she needed to know which cartridge could be reloaded , center fire or rim fire.

Anyone born on or after September 1, 1969, is required to successfully complete a hunter education course before obtaining a hunting license of any kind in Louisiana. A lifetime license will be issued to any person who has completed the Hunter Education course and has been certified; however, a temporary lifetime license certificate will be issued to any child who has not completed the Hunter Education course, or who is not of certifiable age. (Certifiable age is age 10 and over.) Upon completion of the Hunter Education course, a valid lifetime license showing the certificate number will be issued to him at that time, free of charge.

You can buy a lifetime license without the hunters safety card, it will just show up on the license as 00000000. In the future, after they take the course, get a duplicate with the card number on it.

You just need to fill out the application, provide an original birth certificate (get an extra), and a copy of the parents drivers license,

Pay your cash and you should be good.

I am in the process of getting one for my son now, he's under a year old.

You won't actually get the license, LDWF will send your kid a certificate in the mail with a letter congratulating them. In the letter they tell you that they will not get the actual license until they complete the hunter safety course and the course can't be taken until they turn 12. Best $200.00 you can spend on them!

Another question: this only covers basic hunting and fishing, right? They will still need big game and any other add-ons each year?

It covers everything except for your federal duck stamp.
Fresh, salt fishing, big and small game, etc. all included.
All non commercial...essentially.

Well that's interesting and I didn't know that. Mine is taking her shooting class and test this evening then I'll get her the lifetime. And yes money well spent because she will use it over the years, which makes me a happy father. She has several girls she has grown up with that are avid hunters and fisherladies and I do believe they will stick together doing this for a lifetime. Beats the hell out of some of the other options kids opt for today at least I believe it does.

Yeah, I don't think a 1 year old can take a hunters safety course. I thought you were joking. I knew there was a way, just didn't know how to apply without that number.

Yes, it also covers WMA permits if you ever want to hunt one. Pretty awesome. I'm getting mine next year since I'm already paid up this year. I figure:
$15 for fishing + salt
$15 basic hunt
$14 big game
$5.50 duck
$15 WMA permit
= $64.50 will take me 8 years to recoup.
I'll be hunting and fishing a lot more than 8 years.

Also, for some of you, you can factor in:
$10.50 bow
$10.50 primitive firearms
$5.50 turkey

I don't do any of those, so it can't really factor them in, but if I choose to start doing any of them, it will shade off the time to recoup. Adding everything together, should take you just over 5 years to recoup. It's a no brainer for an avid Louisiana outdoorsman.

I called and asked about that and a few other things a month or so ago...the rep told me just to send it in without the hunters safety course number.
She stressed that I needed to get an extra birth certificate, they will keep the one you send in...so don't send in your only copy.

If you plan on staying in LA and even hunt/fish occasionally with your child, it's well worth the $200.

Also it does not cover crab gear license, but you pretty much hit it on the head.

I did the same here in Alabama for my son before he turned 2 yrs old. They made me send in a letter from his daycare as well to "prove residency"

Best thing about getting it now, if they ever move off out of state, the liscense is still valid whenever they come home to visit. That was a great thing when my brother was living in Texas and would come home to hunt or fish.

If you go to the office on Quail drive to apply they do not keep it, so no need to get an extra birth certificate.

You don't need it however you do have to send in an official birth certificate. If you buy it before they are 4 yrs old the price is only $200 for lifetime hunting and fishing. I purchased one for all three of my children for their first birthday present. They will receive a certificate but no card. You send in the hunters safety information upon completion (they have to be 10yrs old to take it) and then they will receive their card.

ETA: If you wait till they are old enough to take the safety course the price will double to $400 if they don't raise the prices on you in the next 10 yrs

The $200 price for the combo for kids under 4 is too good to pass up. Bought all three of mine one for their first Christmas. I have a feeling we will see these prices go up in the next few years, but regardless, it's a deal even at the $500 price.

I just got this done for my newborn. I got the certificate and the card with 000000 within about 3 weeks of sending it off.

Definitely a deal. My parents bought mine when i was 14 and at 34 yrs old it has more than paid for itself. Best thing is never having to remember if you renewed your fishing license. Only thing i have to do is get my deer tags printed and also the free offshore landing permit for offshore. Hell i have even bought a lifetime crab trap license. Gear licenses are 10x the yearly fee.

Mine has just payed for itself! I got it when I was in college. excellent use of $500.

A note though: Each year the hunter needs to get the HIP certification=Free AND have the deer tags printed=again free. Both of these can be done anywhere that sells hunting licences. (Walmart, Academy, etc.)

Great job Dad! That will be a great present for the child.

When we did this for Hunt jr we were issued a certificate from LDWF that we kept. Once he was old enough to take the class he did it and we kept the card. When he was old enough to need a license we went to LDWF with all of that paperwork and he was issued his lifetime license. Simple process and worth it as if I recall correctly it was only around $220 when we did it for the hunting/fishing combo. Great thing to do for him IMO.
