Really depends on your expectations. What would your main use be? The rod tends to be worse than the reel when they cut costs like that, but for moving baits you may be pretty happy with it.

i'd probably limit it to just freshwater (the little bit it do). most of my fishing is saltwater and i doubt it would hold up to the salt.

Baitcaster or spinning? I have had the M1 baitcaster combo for 2+ years now, paid $120 and have been really happy with it for that price.

I fish about 4x a month average so it has gotten some use.

It’s a good purchase at that price for sure.

I bought the Mach II a few months ago and I am very disappointed in the reel. I paid more than the BP deal but the real isn't very smooth and mine backlashes terribly in any kind of wind. The rod is junk as well. I would spend $99 get the BP pro qualifier 2 and get a good rod. That PQ2 is a badass real for the money. It's my favorite bait caster by far.

I was a long time Shimano guy myself. I ventured off and bought a Lews speed spool (model BB1HZ. It was $159.99. After that I was hooked. I now have 11-12 of them in the $160-$180 range. I LOVE them. Very smooth casting and reeling in. It will throw a weightless Senko 30-40 yards with ease. Lews is my brand of choice for sure. They have many different models and price ranges but the ones I'm using make me not want to try any other brand.

I'm a Shimano guy too but I have a Lew's Tournament bait caster. It's a good reel but I prefer the Shimano brake system over the Lew's; Shimano has more so you can make more subtle changes.

the one on sale is the Mach combo. i've never seen a combo package on sale that has a decent rod included.

I seen it yesterday in the BP sale paper. Havent fished that particular reel but I'm sure its not a crappy reel. For that price its probably worth giving it a shot. I have 3 of the white Lews rods($100 each) and I really like those.

I love all of my Lew’s reels and I really am not impressed with the Mach series. The Speed Spool LFS, Tournament MB, Super Duty, BB1 and BB1 Pro, and all the Team Lew’s reels are fantastic though.

I think you'll be disappointed. Lew's is just a name now and has been for a long time. They are really just an importer and the reels are made by either Doyo or Dawon. As someone already said, the rods in combos tend to be of poor quality. I think you'd be better off finding something from the Bargain Cave.

thanks. i was afraid of this. same thing has happened to some of Penn's reels. if you know what to look for you can see the chinese workmanship defects.

Yeah, this has me bummed out because I really need a new spinning reel to take to salt occasionally. I am tired of having them seize up after a few trips.
