If fishing a lake with no current to worry about, find a slaughter house that sells heavy beef blood...it should be a bit thicker than cranberry sauce and you can slice it up into pieces an inch long by half inch wide. Dump plenty of sugar on it and keep chilled until ready to fish. It's a little bit of extra work, but catfish love it...

The space between my hooks are my wingspan and my hook lines are arm length.

Wingspan between hooks and a foot to foot and a half on hook lines.

How concerned should I be with getting my weight to the bottom?

Hook lines just depends. usually bout a foot n a half. Hook size and bait depends on what I'm fishing for. Channel cats, I'll used chicken livers usually. Bream for flatheads. And cut shad for channels and blues.
