Let's talk gear ratio in baitcasters

I'm about to add to my arsenal, and I have to admit I've never really looked closely at the gear ratio of the reels I've bought. Mostly just went for what was in my price range and was comfortable.
I've decided its time I got a serious baitcaster, but I want to know as much as I can about gear ratios before I drop the money on a reel I hopefully have for awhile. I mostly throw light plastics, with topwater plug here and there, so what ratio is going to be best for the slower, finesse style baits in cover? TIA

i use a 7:1 for almost everything, a 5:1 for spinnerbaits and crankbaits...the 7:1 has a larger gear inside which takes in more line as you crank, the lower the ratio, the slower the retrieve
can't go wrong with a 6.2:1

5.1:1 for slow finesse fishing. 7.1:1 is fine for top waters but way too fast for worms or creature baits. Just get a 6:0 and you can use it for everything.
ETA: the ratio means that for every turn of the hand the spool turns so many time.

Thanks fellers, this is basically what I needed to know.

I keep one high ratio for buzzbaits and traps.
I keep several "normal" ratio for general use.
I keep 2 low ratio for cranks and slow rolled spinnerbaits.

If I'm fishing in cover, I want a 7:1 so I can get the fish out quick.

I would assume you would want a lower ratio fishing worms/flukes to get a slower finesse retrieve in cover, then just reel like hell to get them out.

i wouldn't...i like the higher ratio for finesse and texas rigging, i'm mostly just taking up slack as i'm working a bait...the higher ratio allows you to take in slack quicker and get to the fish, especially if he hits it on the fall and is swimming towards you, you want to be able to take up that slack quickly
eta: the ratio doesn't affect how slow i can make my presentation (while texas rigging or finesse fishing)

That makes a little more sense. I was thinking you run the risk of doing more than taking slack, and messing up the presentation, with a high ratio.

Yeah I'm with you, I like the higher ratios for worm fishing so I can catch up with em when they're heading straight for the boat.
A faster reel shouldn't speed up your presentation at all.

It does for weightless stuff for me. Not Texas rigs though. Not sure why that is.
I have all 6.something reels and one 7.whatever curado. The fast one only is used in salt and occasionally for cranks, I lack a purpose made crank bait setup currently.

just get a spinning reel for all situations/applications/ and presentations.

I'd sooner stick my dick in a Zebco 33 and start reeling
