Learn me something about pocket knives

I just acquired a brand new Hogue X1. It’s a nice knife, but it’s dull. Is this common with better pocket knives?
I usually get throwaway pocket knives

I can't speak for all brands, but Benchmades ship sharp AF.

I'm not an expert, but Spyderco and Benchmade have been almost surgical.

Have owned several different kinds but never was committed to one. Recently received a Case knife from my Godchild and it’s great and sharp as a razor out of the box

Never had a Benchmade. I had a kershaw gifted to me once that was sharp AF too.
Not a big deal and I’m not bitching since I won a $150 msrp knife for $5 in a raffle, but seems like it should be sharp

It should’ve had a sharp AF factory edge on it like every other knife I’ve purchased.

Its much better to get a somewhat dull knife w/ quality steel than a sharp knife w/ lower qualify steel. Your going to have to sharpen it anyway; that blade will take a better edge and last longer. My favorites: Benchmade Mini and Reg Griptilian and Spyderco Paramilitary and Delica but looks like you have a good one too.

Yeah it’s CPM154 so it should be a good blade when tuned up

Most mass produced knives suck in my experience. I like using a local knife maker/company that can tell you all about the different steels and what not and get the right knife for your needs. Most people tend to get a knife from Cabelas and after a year wonder why it sucks.

Every knife I have received/bought has come somewhat sharp, but not to my standards. I always sit down with an Arkansas stone and spend some time getting it right. Some people buy all sorts of sharpening devices or throw away blades. I like the nostalgia of the stone my Dad taught me to use.

But do you drink your ultra rare IPA while sitting on your bespoke sofa and wearing your free trade slippers and admire it?

I like Case drop point pocket knives. You can lose 4 or 5 of them for what something like a Benchmark cost.
I just use a Accusharp sharpener. They are cheap--less than $20--and sharpen quick.
If you want to be knife snob or something spend more and get you some fancy sharpener. If you want to carry a knife and use it get a Case in stainless or cold steel and keep a accusharp sharpener around. I have cleaned a lot of fish and a deer or two with a Cash drop point pocket knife when nothing else was available.

Whats wrong with a stone? If we ever lose electricity for 2 months, half this board is dead.

I tend to stay away from knives with stainless steel blades. Go get yourself a Case Soddbuster. Stainless steel blades the edge has a tendency to roll and break off. The Case Soddbuster can clean a deer without having to resharpin your knife.

I recently purchased a Spyderco knife, the C154 squeak, and it was mediocre sharp out of the box. I of course kept it because I love their products but I was a bit surprised
