Myself, and a lot of others I’ve spoken with, agree with most of that argument and have been expressing similar sentiments since this all began. There’s no evidence that “we” are over fishing the speckled trout into non existence.

Wait, do you believe lower limits had an adverse effect on trophy trout?

The guy that said this?

From my years of experience, I have concluded that trout population will never be affected by changing the limits on trout number and trout size. Trout population is not affected by the rod and reel.

And you said this
quote:

even speck fishing in Big Lake. Lower limits there, and trophy trout all but disappear.

So what do you believe? Can’t have it both ways

Either rod and reels don’t affect trout populations or they do

You are saying big lake limit changes are the reason trophy trout disappeared and then saying rod and reel has no effect on the population

I don't want it both ways

What was their reasoning for the lowered limit?

All I'm saying is that it hasn't helped Big Lake at all

I'm saying they lowered the limit, and there is no evidence it has made any positive difference

I know several groups in my area that do yearly charters, and all of them stopped going to Big Lake and go elsewhere.

I'll let the Big Lake guys answer, but the fishing there has not improved since the lowered limit

I get what you're saying, but he could be saying that the changes they expected didn't happen, not that the changes they implemented CAUSED the trophy trout to disappear. Just playing devil's advocate

I have no clue if the lowered limit affected trophy trout numbers

I do know they don't catch trophy trout like they used to

Not sure what they were intending by lowering the limit, but I do know guys that went there for the bigger trout do not catch them like they used to

At meeting now. It’s looking like they’re going to table any changes. Not voted on yet.

I had already said enough and didn't feel like getting any more detailed, but I should have known better.

It does read like cause and effect, but wasn't my intention.

Some fishermen I fished with there that have caught big trout, even top 10 LA record trout, did feel that there would be a good chance the big trout fishing would get even better.

All we do know for a fact is that it didn't help in that regard.

Our latest assessment of spotted seatrout in Louisiana revealed that the stock is overfished—i.e. the size of the spawning population is below the minimum level established for the stock. When a stock is overfished, we must take action to rebuild the population back to (or above) the target level. We are currently considering several options for management changes to reduce harvest levels and allow the stock to recover.

There does exist some common sense still.

I just don't have much faith it exists in LA when it comes to government

Thx for the update

I will listen to any person that fishes Big Lake and can tell me face to face that they have seen bigger trout since the change.

Overall and on average

Is that you?
