any fish in there these days? haven't fished it since a kid, I'll be in the area this weekend and trying to decide if I should pack a couple of rods

worth throwing out a few jugs for catfish?

I find it completely empty of fish. There are some folks to do very well on it at night. Also there are some deep humps that produce a bunch of big bluegill.

If I was dead set on doing something on it, I would strongly encourage drinking cold beer. Maybe pitch the jugs out to say you are doing something?

Then motor up to tunks and get some oysters.

I grew up there and although I didn't fish people did well with sacaliat, crappie, bluegill...whatever you call those yummy flat fish. You basically get into the stumps and fish just off of each boat dock. My dad used to sink dog food cans after he punched holes in them, and the occasional Christmas tree.

Pretty much this.

You can find fish schooling occasionally out there. You can also throw a crank bait/jig in the stumps on the NE side of the lake. But it's pretty damn void of fish

The grass is back, so it will have a few good years before they kill it again. My biggest 5 fish sack came out of there thanks to another of our posters.

Weird thing about the name, you reversed it (no big deal), but I have always wondered why some lakes are named with "Lake" first and others with it last. Anyone got an explanation?

Examples

Kincaid Lake
Cross Lake
Caddo Lake
Lake Dauterive
Lake Ponchartrain
Lake Palourde

Is it a North/South Louisiana thing?

I would, but then there is:

Lake Texoma
Lake O' The Pines
White Lake
Grand Lake
Calcasieu Lake
Lake Claiborne

It almost seems random, maybe it is.

I like the ones who have both: CLECO Lake/Lake Rodemacher.

Not all Cenla folks!

I live near Kincaid and Cotile. Years back I had a conversation with Mike Woods of LDWF. He told me those lakes - including Indian Creek and Valentine - were "sterile". I asked why. He said "low water hardness" - about 20 ppt CaCO. Water hardness is a big factor in aquatic production, the higher the better.

So I researched. The waters he rated against the "Kisatchie lakes" - Cane River, Concordia, Bruin, Wallace, Black Lake, Toledo Bend, Red River, Larto, Saline - all had 4x the water hardness (or more) of Kincaid. HOWEVER... because catfish and rough species need high water hardness to spawn successfully, the game fish populations of those lakes was only twice that of Kincaid.

Further, the clear water allows the fish to feed by sight all the time. And become very wary. There might be 20 bass in an area and if you can get more than one of them to eat, you've done good!

I'm not complaining. Kincaid is GREAT flyfishing water. If you don't care about putting lots of fish in the ice chest but want a better-than-average chance to catch fish on flies, this is your spot. I've fished alongside guys that were throwing every lure imaginable and outcaught them on flies. Not many places can claim that.

Yeah, I now use totally different stuff when fishing IC and Kincaid vs a lot of other lakes, especially bottom land lakes.

I need to make a trip back to Rodemacher. My and ClassicGold made a trip a few months back but were run off by lightning. We used to tear up the white perch and bass where the hot side flows into the cold side.

The last time I fished Kincaid was about 3 years ago, we had a club tournament up there. I ended up winning with around 12 pounds but I caught a ton of fish. All on a weightless watermelon seed finesse worm on a spinning rod with 10 pound test. I had to fish it slow as shite but I caught em.
