Wouldn't call that started. At 4.5 months you're just buying a potty trained puppy with no initial vet bills. It won't realistically be able to do anything. Certainly not hunt this winter.

That being said, I would expect to pay somewhere between $1.5k-3k, depending on pedigree. Low end is very low, high end could be a tad higher.

If not buying at least a 10-12 month old dog. I'd just buy a 7 week old pup and enjoy the ride.

This. I wouldn't touch a Started dog that I couldn't watch pick up bumpers (doing simple doubles and maybe some long marks) and preferably pick up birds in water that it has to swim in over a real shotgun. Then I would make damn sure the dog did not whine or whimper to the point they flare birds. Being steady is also pretty important as well.

These are all things you shouldn't have to do buying a Started dog. Otherwise, like you said, buy a puppy.

Of course being able to do the things MWP mentioned means a price closer to 5-6k.

That pup may be the perfect dog for you and at a price that suits you, but know what your getting into and that dog is not huntable this season. Formal retriever training doesn't typically start until 6 months, for 6 months. Even after that it's still a basic retriever.

What I described is pretty much a Started dog since that is what would be required to pass a Started Hunt Test except of course the doubles. I priced a few like this around SE TX/NE LA and was finding dogs around $2K to $3K a few years back but those were dogs trained just to be sold as Started dogs. I am sure you could find one or two if you did your homework for less but those would be gambles from probably folks trying to sell a fully trained dog for some outlying circumstance.

Now a field trail wash out dog that can run blinds and do multiple marks would probably fall into this price range with a proven Finished Dog with a HRCH title or better would probably go well highter, maybe into the $10K range.

Dog will not be ready to do much at 4.5 months. Really need to see what the goals are for the pup. If you intend to self train then getting the dog then wouldn't be bad. But if you intend to have the dog professionally trained, it should be headed to the trainer at 5 months if it's a top flight pedigree dog. What the pup is doing from 10 weeks to five months is very important for foundation.

To answer your question on price, there are almost too many variables to consider given the info you have presented. Would need to see 5 gen pedigree and what each dog was titled in to give more accurate price.
