Thought I would consult with the expertise of the OB. I'm looking to get a Golden Retriever pup in the next few months. Won't really be used as a hunting dog, but though I would get better feedback here (as opposed to the OT). I'm in the NOLA metro area, but can venture out to bordering states. I know Hunnington Farms is a reputable breeder in the area, but I've heard a few stories that have led me to look elsewhere.

What recommendations do y'all have for breeders?

There are not too many places to choose from as most dogs are sold on limited registration now. Hunnington Farms is an option, but you are going to pay dearly and likely still get a limited registration. Nonetheless, mostly good dogs and good operation that they have.
There are maybe a few others similar to Hunnington, but on a smaller scale. Depends on what type Golden you are looking for too, such as hunting, show, light colored, darker red, etc.
On a side note, I stud my Golden which has Hunting Titles, extensive pedigree, and the OFA certs. to a few local dams. There are two litters on the ground currently and one upcoming in a few months if you are interested.

I'm really looking for a medium colored Golden (not light nor dark). Won't be used for hunting or show, but I am looking for the OFA certs. I was planning to buy after football season, as my weekends are pretty occupied between LSU/Saints games. With that being said, I would certainly be interested if you think you'll have a litter ready late November or later.

My stud is the medium Golden color that you are likely looking for. He has a scheduled breeding coming up in the next two months depending on the dam cylce. Both have their OFA certs and should make a great litter of medium to light color. The dam owner is out of BR and not sure how he is going to price the pups. They should hit the ground in December if all goes as planned. At any rate, if you need more info on finding a pup, let me know. shoot me an email, and we can go from there.

Hunnington farms is really the only breeder in Louisiana that breeds good looking pups. I was looking a couple months ago and ended up driving to Georgia to get my pup because I wasn't impressed with any breeder in LA.

I've got a pregnant bitch that will drop a litter in about 3 weeks. Apparently they will not be any good but in case you don't want to drive to Georgia I'll be selling the pups. Both parents are highly papered. Assuming of course my black lab didn't somehow tag that arse thru the fence...

Which breeder did you go through? That's a beautiful Golden.

Yea, thats not true. Hunnington breeds some good looking dogs, but they are not the only game in town. They may have a wonderful website and do a fair share of advertising, but they are in the puppy selling business first and foremost.

And that is a good looking Golden that you have there. I'd criticize you for going all the way to Georgia to get him, but I went further for mine years ago.

I had a Hunnington golden
beautiful dog with an incredible personality
he did however die at ten of cancer and I'm not the only Hunnington owner who has experienced that

Yeah, a coworker of mine had one die of cancer at 8 and currently has one that developed hip dysplasia at 2. Both are from Hunnington.

I've heard about Grindol's as well, but it looks like they charge even more than Hunnington. I was hoping to find a good breeder with dogs in the $800-1000 range.

Would disagree there. Mine's from a breeder in Amite; never thought a dog could get so many street compliments. He's about 1 year, 9 months right now, will be 2 in early Dec.

Thee the darker ones like this one and also lighter ones, we looked all over the place seeking out dark ones.

Don't think he's got any kind of hunt champion history, but he friggin loves to chase ducks and has a great personality/demeanor for the house and family.

My sisters neighbor had a litter of White Lab puppies in his garage. I looked at the pups and asked about them. He said all of them were sold for $2,000 each. I was like shite man that's $10,000 worth of puppies

He said they were from a really good blood line with papers. I had no idea pups were that spendy. That's why I have a mutt.

it costs a shite ton of money to raise a litter of pups, but some of these prices now a days are a bit much. $2k for just a puppy is silly

According to their website it looks like the breeder in Amite is charging over $1500 for pups. Does that sound right?

Agreed, but these folks don't mind spending it. I kind of get it for a champion hunting bloodline, but for a house pet, I can't understand spending that much.

My mutts have always been good enough for me.

Eta- those dark folders are some of the prettiest dogs in the world.
