Killing Coyotes

Been having a little problem with coyotes getting too close to the house and dogs the last couple of weeks. Anybody have any tried and true methods on killing a few? Was thinking about letting some pork rot and putting it out with the dogs in the house to lure them in.

its tough to trap them when you have dogs that roam. Legholds are the most effective. Snares can be productive too if you know where they are coming from.
the problem is things that will catch a song dog will also catch a house dog.

Yeah trapping isn't something I have in mind, was thinking more so of baiting one evening

I've tried baiting them a few times before. I guess they know I'm watching, because the assholes never come by when I do

rotting meat doesn't work when they have tons of food around.... especially so in the suburbs...
they are wary as heck in the suburbs..

It's pretty rural land, almost 500 acres around my house that is just timberland

I live in Metairie. I'm not trying to shoot a coyote in my front yard

2" chunks of memory foam mattress soaked in bacon grease. They can't digest it and die. Pick it up every night so the birds of prey don't eat it.

Lame. I have a sniper outpost set up my my 4 year olds room, just waiting. And waiting.
Coyotes are pretty much the only topic of conversation these days for Old Metairie on the Nextdoor app.

Just a suggestion... if one of your neighbor's pet dogs gets out and eats that bait how are you going to handle that discussion with them? Poisoning should be the absolute last resort, it's very highly regulated and very illegal if you get caught doing it without a permit and proper licensing.

I'm not trying to poison them, was hoping bait, wait, and shoot would work and be a fun way to scratch my itch for the next few months

Get one of those little noise makers that sounds like a dying rabbit. Set it up where you can watch it from concealment about 50 yards away. Grab an AR15, or similar, and wait.

We have tons of them in our area in BR.

phew... I happen to know a neighbor that runs some momma cows in a pasture behind our neighborhood and he setup a bait/poison station and he accidentally killed a pet that was the neighborhood mascot. She was a beautiful Great Pyrenees and all the kids loved her, it was tragic.

This is going to sound crazy to you probably.
get a couple of gallon water jugs, and piss in them until you fill them up, then let it set a few days to get ripe.
Pour it out at about Sunset where you want to blast them.
hide and wait. They comin.
Probably should make this clear, so you don't waste your time: You want to pour out the piss, and set up close to where you know they are moving through and hunting.
I guess it's a territorial thing for them, when they come, they are going to make lots of noise.

I keep reading on the news reports that if you kill them they will breed even faster.

There are studies out showing that it is (forgetting the scientific term) about reproduction. Basically, if they aren't pressured the population peaks in an area due to overpopulation and will fall and find a medium with nature. The catch is that nature's medium may not sit well with humans. If coyotes are feeling the pressure, they will reproduce faster to keep up.
Though I don't have experience with biology I find this fascinating.

Get a predator call and have at it. I've seen it done during the day and at night. You will have to invest in a red Q-beam for the night hunting, but then all you need is a call.
During the day, use a call and a visual lure. Fox Pro sells some nice electronic stuff, but it's pricey. A mouth call and a homemade lure will work.
Problem is, if you are successful hunting from the house, it will be short lived. They're too smart to be fooled multiple times at the same location. Particularly if there's a lot of food sources. The guys you see on tv are usually hunting places where the yotes have to hunt to survive as opposed to just raiding garbage cans.

I am firmly convinced in central and south la.. rats, mice and frogs make up the lions share of their diets...
tried calling one in a while back that was suspected of nabbing some neighborhood pets...... puppy whine and cat meows.. did not interest him....... A live rat in a trap..... brought him out REAL quick
