Anyone ever try kayak hunting in the Cat Island NWR? I am interested in trying it out. I may go scout Friday afternoon in the kayak, but wanted to get other opinions on the idea first.

by the time you find a spot to hunt they close it again.

the walking is pretty easy, though.

River forecast has BR gauge hitting 24 on Thursday and not getting back below 24 until late December. That is the trigger.

Was out there last Wed when they opened it back up. Depends on what kinda hunting you want to do but don't see much to do from a kayak.

This is from the NWR website:
Mississippi River water levels are projected to fall for the remainder of November through mid-December. Visitation and established hunting seasons resume beyond the blue goose trail and parking lot when water levels drop below 24 feet on the Mississippi River at the Baton Rouge tide gauge. River levels can be checked at this link.

Does this mean blue goose trail and the parking lot right by it will be open at 24 ft and only the areas past that are closed?

Going for duck hunting btw.

They had the gate closed by Blue Goose last week up to Wed. now the whole thing is opened. I believe the bridge before the back parking "woodduck trail" I belive is washed out. Saw lots of people parked before it and was too muddy for me to get closer and try to turn around. Water was rolling
out of Blackfork and Lake Platt.

That Facebook post was from a couple weeks back. That did not account for the last few fronts that rolled across the country. These are the river projections at Baton Rouge gauge for the next 28 days. Access will close later this week and not open again until late December.

Does Cat island have an app to check in or do you have to check in at that one station?

Are you talking about the bridge over Hardwick's Ditch? It's washed out? That sucks.

There is a "launch" at the first parking lot you get to by blue goose trail. I have not tried it. If they do not close on Saturday morning I am going to go scout it out.

I think so. There were trucks lining the side of the road just before it last Wed. road was getting slick so didn't wanna drive up any closer and have no place to turn around. Im gonna ride back there during my lunch break and see what I see.

Sloughs should be holding some ducks back there though

Depends what youre after. You can get away from the crowds if you really want to. Especially for deer. Should be plenty of water on the far west side in the sloughs to find some ducks.

Water is still falling slowly out of Blackfork but is rolling into Lake Platt right now

Bridge is there but foot traffic only

No the bridge there is fine. On the refuge there is a small bridge at the end of the road through the refuge that goes to the last parking area. Its closed to all vehicle traffic. Hve to park before it and walk in
