Was out at a pond scouting for ducks today and saw a pair of Whooping Cranes. Pretty sure they had a little one with them but I have not actually ever seen one before today. What is the bird on the right? And yes I know the picture is shitty but it was about 400 yards away. Going to try to get closer tomorrow.

If you look real close there appears to be a red band on his leg.

Yep. I’ve seen a few and it’s frowned upon if you give out exact locations of them.

Might be a Sandhill crane. I don't know what else it would be.

What a treat that’s amazing. I would zip them a message we don’t have very many of them at all.

There is a huge migration they stop off at the Hiwassee wildlife refuge above Chattanooga

It is a young Whooping Crane.

Thats him in the middle.

They have enough jewelry to fill up two lanyards.

Pictures are super blurry because they are cropped so much. They were super skittish and I did not want to get too close.

Not funny. Way too much of our tax dollars being put into them to make light of the assholes that kill them.

It looks like there is a silver band above the red. The red looks like a wound to me or irritation from the band.

They put like two or three different bands on each leg. It's how they ID the birds; color pattern and on which leg those colors are.

I agree. You never give the locations of these out to the public. It's terrible it has to be that way, but it is what it is. Did you contact LDWF Whooping crane division? It is a good idea to send them information on location and pictures. They appreciate it and will give you additional information on what your asking for about the birds.

It’s like one of the most endangered birds in the world, know your environment in the eastern migration group/flock what high Cotten photographed is about 4 % of the entire eastern flock, there is only like 70-90 birds in that group.

Yeah they looked at the bands and told me the whole history of them and their mates. They use a few of my photos on their website
