I have had many dogs but I normally have the females spade but this particular border collie is the best cow dog I have ever had. I have a good male so I bred him to her. I have very little experience with pregnant dogs so my question is when they get close to time to have puppies (by my calculation should be within a week) do they normally go ape shite crazy? It is humping the head of an orphaned calf. Normally she is nothing but teeth on a cow and isn't messing with the other dogs. Ideas?

I have heard of this type of behavior before. I have also seen them nesting by digging all kinds of holes.

Take her temp. See if her temp as dropped. An old timer told me that a dog's temp is normally around a 100 degrees. If it drops to around 98 she is in early labor.

Does she have a secure whelping box?

My guess is that she is in early labor and is scared. BUT, the only reliable way to tell if she has started labor is checking her temp.

I assume the whelping box is nice secure room where she can't cause any damage to herself. Sounds like it's very close to time that you need to put her up.

The humping thing is a show of dominance. I'd bet her hormones are squirrley because of the pregnancy. Pregnant women are crazy.

She has a room to herself with one of those igloo looking things for a box. She does it when I take her out and feed the calf my 9 year old asked me why she is doing that and I just didn't have an answer for him.

He knows about what breeding means being raised on a farm. His question was just the same as mine why is a female dog humping the head of a calf. My answer was hell I dont know

Any chance this has to do with lactation?

Orphan calf=least dominant animal around ;dunno:
or, she's actually lactating and trying to get it to nurse?
