In my younger days, I would have taken a shot at it this morning. But at 5:00 when the alarm went off, i saw the lightning and looming storms..... after covering over 7 miles on two different hunts yesterday me and my old wheels needed a rest.

Sadly, no. This deer had fooled me all season. He won’t score 115”, but he’s at least five and I just got fixated on him.

Several times this season he would come out in a plot, and stand off in the distance as every other deer would walk past me.

Friday afternoon he did it again. He stood up wind at 100 yards and watched 7 other bucks come out, feed, and walk past me. He stayed put until after dark.

Finally yesterday afternoon a small three year old 8 point started bumping some does around and it was more than he could take. I shot him at 32 yards and watched the arrow bury to the fletching behind his shoulder.

I’m pretty sure you’re familiar with the area. It’s 700 acres of WRP planted in 1994. It’s an absolute jungle and with the water up it’s tough sledding.

When I shot him he wheeled, tucked his tail hard and ran straight away from me. I hung my bow and cupped my hands behind my ears to better hear him. I heard him cross one small slough and then run into a second before he went quiet.

I could still hear other deer running when he went quiet. I even put my drone up this morning to help. The briers are head high in that area though.

Sorry for the long winded answer. Two things I need to do before next season. Install Luminocks and research any type of way to track my arrow via blue tooth.

Making some tamales and will cut up my sons deer from earlier in the week. Hunting clothes and guns put up. It’s been a great season.

Hate to hear that. WRP/CRP can be brutal to track in. I bet he’s not far out there. Watch for the buzzards.
