I need to replace the wooden fence around my yard. I got a quote for $4900. This is for 6ft Cedar with steel posts set down 27" using galvanized ring shanked nails. It will include a kick board and top trim for 230 linear feet. Price also includes 1 small gate and 1 8 ft double gate.

Does $4900 sound about right? Too high? Too low? Just want to make sure I'm getting a decent price.

Where are you located?

$16 to $18/ LF on cedar is the going rate on the Northshore.

The double gate adds about $500.

Your quote isn't too bad.

Nails are easy, but I'd use screws. You can remove every third board if a cane comes our way. JMO

Where you located? Why cedar? Why steel?

I asked about screws and the guy said he could use them but that it would raise the cost due to the extra labor. He said ring shanked galvanized nails were more than adequate. Would I rather screws? Sure, but I'm not willing to spend more than $5k on a wood fence at this time.

I'm guessing cedar cause pine is crap.

And 230' of fence removing every third board would be removing about 160 boards/1000 screws. Good luck with that!

Also, shadow box FTW.

Yeah, but unless you tighten them up you give up some privacy.

The metal posts sold for fencing. Maybe it's not steel. Whatever metal those posts are made out of is what I mean.
Cedar b/c pine is crap and cedar is supposed to be resistant to bug damage etc

They have different grades, Home Depot and Lowes are lesser grades more than likely.

Pine is only crap if you don't treat it. I still use 4x4s for my posts. Ring shank nails are sufficient

Cedar will last. My parents have a cedar fence that's probably 20 years old. It gets gray but the wood is still perfect. Every few years my dad pressure washes it and it looks new.

Pine on the other hand will warp and look like crap within a year.

Treated pine still warps and looks ugly.

I second the "ring shank is more than adequate club".

That's not too bad - I do fences on the weekends and usually quote about 10-20% less than the fence companies. I plugged your numbers into my estimator and came up with $4750. 12 gauge steel posts, 6 ft cedar with either 3.5" or 6" wide pickets. I'd do it for ya, too bad I'm in DFW

Eta - unstained

Ok. Good to hear that that is a fair quote then.

Hey LSUnivFan a few friends of mine now live in DFW. I'll let them know you do fences. What's up with the crazy fences up there anyway? I visit several times a year and most of the houses have 8ft board on board with kick guards, moulding, all kinds of decorative gates and practically all of them are stained. They're badass but these people must be paying $10k+ for a fence. I've never seen anything like it in Nola. Hell even in shitty places in Garland or Mesquite they have fences worth more than their house.

Haha - more. A buddy of mine did 8ft cedar board on board, top trim, rail cap all the way around, two walk thru gates and a 24 electric sliding gate across a 3 car alley driveway (And not the most elaborate fence in his 'hood either). Total linear feet, 145. I asked him how much he paid - 16.5k.

This was a couple of years ago, when I had just rebuilt my fence, and I said I KNOW we coulda done it for less. The following spring, another buddy of mine built a fence around his huge-arse yard (315 ft) similar to buddy 1 for about half. Only 6ft, and electric gate was already there, but buddy 1 shite himself and buddy 2 said we need to go into business.

How deep do you go on posts? I'm a little concerned about the 27" as I think it should be at least 2.5ft. Guy said 27" is fine but that he could go deeper if I wanted for more $$$

That's only 3" deeper than what he is suggesting. You are fine.
