Is the Powerstroke 6.4 worth a flip with EGR delete?

Haven't owned a Powerstroke since my old 6.0.

Go.

They have so many other issues that can go wrong. Turbo, radiator, dpf, hpfp... I drove one for a while. Real nice trucks till they break... And then break again. If you get one delete the dpf and egr. If you delete dpf you have to get a programer. Keep programer on lowest level hp gains

I've got a 2010 6.4. dpf and egr delete with Spartan tuner. I run either a 275 tune or 210 tow tune. But I drive like a grandpa so I don't think I'm risking messing anything up by running a high HP tune. The higher HP tunes give the best fuel mileage.

I have almost 80k on mine and knock on wood, haven't had any issues yet. I keep the oil and fuel filters changed ahead of recommended schedule and use motorcraft filters. From my research the radiators were bad on the 08 6.4 but they corrected it for 09 and 10.

The 6.2 is a very good engine.

All of the 3/4 tons have good gas motors now and you even get an option of a 5.7 or 6.4 with the ram.

Don't buy a diesel if you don't need a diesel.

Agree with downshift, until the EPA lightens up on emissions I won't buy another diesel.

The dpf system has to be the dumbest thing ever created, in an effort to reduce emissions they made all diesels get significantly worse fuel efficiency, and this is supposed to be better for the environment. Our government at it finest

The DPF sucks but the urea injection system is the best thing that ever happened to them given the restrictions.

As a general rule from here on out, buy a diesel with either zero emission control or all of it. The SCR systems with urea let the engine operate far more efficiently than the ones with just a DPF and no urea. Ever noticed how the 04-10ish years get atrocious fuel economy but the new ones will get 18-20mpg? Thank urea for that improvement

How much def fluid do they burn per mile? That's always been my concern with the urea.

10-20% of fuel burn is a good rule of thumb. Depends how hard you run it

I have an F350 and I usually add 5 gallons of DEF between oil changes. I go 7500 miles to an oil change. The more idle time or city driving time you do the less miles you get off the DEF.

ETA: my truck is 2014 6.7L

FWIW I bought a 09 6.4 brand new and put 140,000 miles on it, no issues with the exception of a radiator in around 11 (was under extended warranty still thankfully)

It was a great truck that was all stock, never even deleted the EGR but my god the fuel mileage was bad. 14 was about all I could hope for at best

Traded it in to the dealer this weak for 18 just to give you some idea of what it was worth to them. Btw it was pretty beat up with scratches and what not so a cleaner one might have been worth a little more

My advice: if you must get a diesel go for the 6.7, much better mileage and few more kinks worked out

Of course nothing beats the 7.3 but they are getting so old now it can be hard to find one you can trust to be well taken care of

Agree with Hammer and everything Downshift has said.

I just bought (and have a need) for a 3/4 ton truck. Nothing was off the table- I got a 2500HD with a 6.0.

Yeah, with the 4.11s it sucks gas pulling a trailer- 9-10 mpg. But on the highway (I have 6500 miles on it in one month) it gets 14-16 (14 no problem, 16 rarely).

Friends of mine have new Duramaxes and 6.7 Powerstrokes and say they get 18 highway- so maybe on average they get 4, perhaps only 3 mpg better than the gas. It would take over 150,000 miles to pay back.

Couple that long pay back with the VERY high cost of later model light truck diesel engine repair and it becomes hard to justify.

We don't have a lot of hills to climb here- the old gas does pretty good.

I've noticed lately that even a lot of guys are using the 6.2 gas in their 450 and 550 service trucks- I asked a friend of mine why he went gas and he told me- "I can change the whole engine for less than what Ford would hit me for a set of injectors"

I never looked at it that way but they are correct. Just a fuel system rebuild is about 8k on a diesel

Thanks for all the info guys. I've about talked myself out of a 3/4 ton. I've always owned 3/4 ton trucks but right now have zero need to haul something.

I just wanted another one.
