Irrigation-Landscaping Pro's - Rain Sensor Question

Any opinions on installing a rain sensor on an irrigation system? We've got a RainBird system. Goal is to reduce monthly water usage. Are they worth the trouble? Dependable? I'd guess they might work until the first mocking bird takes a dump on it. Thx.

I'm a landscape architect, we spec them on all our irrigation systems.

The rain sensors are cheap and easy to install, but I never found them reliable. Switched to soil moisture sensors.
The rain sensors may be plenty sufficient for homeowner use.

I had a Rainbird controller with a wireless rain sensor up until two years ago. I switched to a Skydrop wireless controller that uses hyper local weather forecasting via wifi to control watering. Both my old controller and rain sensor are collecting dust in my garage.

Definitely use some type of rain sensor or soil sensor. Use the seasonal adjust on the controller to adjust run times based on the season

Installed an Orbit brand one for my folks' RainBird system early in the Summer and it seems to work fine. Hard part was convincing my dad to stop overriding the damn thing

Will only work for the 1st few months. Don’t use a wireless if you do install one. If you want to cut back usage, change all nozzles to Hunter MP nozzles.

I have a hunter system. I’m on my second wireless rain sensor. The 1st lasted 4-5 years and the one I’m on now has been on there for 4 years.
