I’m seriously thinking of making a .243 AR10

Before you recoil in terror, the .243 is one of the only rounds in stock everywhere I go right now.

It would hunt 4 legged critters and throw lead down range at 3500 FPS with over 2000 ft lbs of energy.

This ammo shortage has shown what rounds you can still find when everything else dries up:

Fun fact, .243 is the only cartridge Ackley said he could not improve.

I lost a nice 8 pt once by of the .243. A .270, 06 would’ve made him mine.

A good shot would have made him yours.

Lol. I love this line. Rage broadheads guys used to say this all the time.

Op, why not?

You can still get 224 Valkyrie ammo. Allows you to use an AR15 lower and 6.8 BCG. My 13 yr old son hunts with it and loves it. Shoots like a laser out to 300 yds. He can hit steel out to 600 with Match ammo.

Absolute truth. Never had a deer or hog go more than 10 yards from my .243. Shot this guy yesterday and he just dropped and flopped a bit.

My 14 year old son dropped a 210lb 8pt dead in his tracks with a .243. Shot placement is your friend.

Figure out what you WANT to shoot and start handling for it.

Ammo shortage and hunting rounds. Two things that shouldn't be in the same sentence.

I've had a box of 20 30—06 rounds last me multiple years. If I had even 60 rounds, I would feel like a king.

I can understand needing hundreds, even thousands of rounds for 9mm, 40 and 223/5.56 as those are used at a much higher range rate....but my hunting setups get used for two purposes, sighting in and killing shite.

To base a build off of ammo availability, in a hunting sense, is shorts sighted.

bullshite. Jumped him off a ditch bank, took what I had, a bigger rifle would’ve got him. This wasn’t a food plot shot off sandbags from a box stand, baw. Action shot.

I take this as you took a bad shot. Caliber didn’t have anything to do with you “missing” that deer. You made or took a bad shot however you want to slice it.

a bad shot is what you took.

trying to somehow prove you are superior to "box stand, sandbag" hunting, when you dont bring home the backstrap using "action shots", is laughable.

So, you took a poor shot you’re not qualified to make.... got it. A .243 with premium ammo (nosler partition) has and will kill any animal in North America, yes that includes southern whitetail.

A bad shot with a .243 might be perfectly fine with a good 180gr .30-06 bullet.

With an adequate caliber, you don't have to watch the buck of a lifetime walk away. You can reach his good stuff no matter what angle he's at and still get an exit.

You're entitled to your opinion. We harvested the deer btw.
