I've reached my limit with halfwits at the proshops I have available to me, and I've decided to take matters into my own hands. I have a list of the necessities that I'll need, but I was wondering if any of you do your own work. What would you suggest I get to make life easier outside of the basics? i.e. press, arrow cutter, basic tools... TIA

ETA 2/1:
Blitzenberger came in the other day along with a scale. Stripped all the screwed up vanes and redid them with a reflective wrap. Used loctite gel control. We’ll see how they hold up. I’m going to tinker with brass and see what kinds of speeds I can get with heavier setups. I sold a pistol and another bow to fund my press that should be here Monday along with a chrono.

Id suggest if you haven't got that figured out at a very minimum you might want to stick with them "halfwits" from your local shop.

I've thought about this also. I know the "what" needs to be done, but lack the "how" to do it. I got aggravated a while back when the guy at the bow shop said bare shaft tuning doesn't work on a compound bow, only recurves. He lost all credibility with me at that point.

K

I have a list of 14 must have items. I'm talking about not so obvious tools/tricks that I may not know I need just yet. But thank you for your input.

I feel you, man. There have been countless instances where I couldn't believe what some of those guys would say. The straw that broke my back though was my most recent visit when I wanted some arrows refletched to a left offset. Well, he didn't have the jig for that, so he had to order it. And it was going to take a couple weeks since he was going to ATA. No biggie, I'll wait. I go to pick them up and wouldn't ya know it? He put a right offset on them anyway. Got home, pulled the fletches off with minimal effort by hand and started putting together a list of everything I'll need.

Probably cheaper and less time consuming to just drive to Kenner once or twice a year and see Sammy at Chag's

That's a long way from middle TN.

ETA: and to the point about time consuming...

I shoot a lot. The other day I had a peep fly out on the shot in the yard. That bow was dead in the water. Had I had a press in my shop, I could've been back shooting in 10 minutes. However, that fix will require a trip during my lunch break the next day at work. Luckily, I had a backup bow. If not, I wouldn't have hunted that day.

I pressed mine with a ratchet strap. I would be hesitant to do that on a $1000 bow, however.

Well i do build my own arrows and if i can do it, i'm sure you can. You could start with that. That's pretty easy. One piece of advice...get an arrow squaring device to true up the ends of shaft and insert. It will improve broadhead flight.

I know she's probably busy, but I'd suggest getting the girl in your avi to work behind the counter at your new bow shop.

That would certainly make life easier, IMO, FWIW.

I agree, but I have boatloads of the regular ones. That's a good one to add for sure though.

I think that’s a really good list. I have the archerydezign draw board and it’s really nice. If you are handy you can build a press and buy fingers from 92safari on archery talk. I have a set of his and they are super adjustable. Unless you are dropping thousands on equipment I would consider just starting with bow tuning. it’s much easier to buy super high quality arrows pre built than it is to send your bow off to be tuned.

Edit:
I don’t see levels or a bow scale on your list. I think you could 95% of the way there(not including arrows) with:
- press you build on your own or an ez green press
- horizontal draw board like the archery dezign or lca,
- some hamskea/ktech type levels for bow and sight
- paper tuning jig
- string separator
- good bow vise
- bow square
- bow scale(to check poundage)

I'm going to piece it together over time. More than anything, I just like to tinker with it. I don't mind spending the time, especially to get something right.

The set of arrows I'm running right now are pretty bomb proof. I got DCA to build them for me. They're nock tuned, and built like tanks. They won't last forever, so I'll likely try to reverse engineer what he did on my next set.
