IKEA Group has acquired 25,000 acres of forest land in Alabama. The global furniture giant purchased the huge tract in Lowndes County. The price for the forest land wasn't initially disclosed. IKEA said the investment in forestry is part of the company's broader strategy to invest in sustainable production of resources that IKEA consumes. The company also owns more than 250,000 acres of forest land in Europe, located in Romania and the Baltic States. "As a responsible forest owner, we are interested in identifying and applying sustainable management methods that will allow us to preserve and even increase the quality of the forest over time," says Krister Mattsson, head of financial asset management for IKEA Group. "Entering the U.S market is a milestone for our investments in forests, and we believe we will learn a lot here while implementing our long-term approach to forest management and applying for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification."

I can't wait to read the FB posts tonight about the outskirts of Montgomery getting an Ikea store from people that only read and share headlines. But hey, maybe they'll finally build one here in Birmingham if they're investing in Alabama.

Is the furniture company finally going to make some decent furniture with some Alabama timber?

I know they're based closer to the Georgia line, near where I grew up, but I have no clue where all they own timber land.

Yup, Great Southern Wood is based in Abbeville in Henry County.

Over the past decade, nine of the top foreign owners of U.S. agricultural land bought most of their land, according to an analysis of data kept by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Much of that land was owned originally by International Paper, the world’s largest paper and pulp company, which sold its 5.6 million acres of timberland in the United States to foreign owners for $4.8 billion in 2006. Read more: Foreign investment in U.S. farmland is on the rise Most of that land was ended up in limited liability corporations called Red Mountain Timber Co I, II, III and IV.

Are you from the county south of there? Had a buddy back in high school who had a nickname that is the first part of your screen name.

Anyone know if people had hunting leases on it before it was sold?

Gotcha. My family moved to Houston County in 1990, and this guy was a huge Bama fan. Just thought we might have known each other IRL.

Lowndes County is some of the premiere white tail hunting in the southeast. I imagine land was a fortune.
