Want to get opinions and experiences with ice machines. Ice maker in side by side fridge just went out and I absolutely refuse to buy another one of those POS. Have not settled on a particular brand or model, will be looking for it to provide drink ice and fill the boat with ~200lbs for trips.

Everyone in these past threads say they break early and often.

I have had a Hoshizaki Ice machine for the past 4 years. The only issue have had with is having to adjust the freeze time when summer rolls around. I have a 350lb machine and a 500lb bin. In the summer it takes 48 hours to refill because I keep in in an non air-conditioned warehouse. In the winter it will typically refill in 24-30 hours. I bought a scratch and dent model form the distributor in Harahan and saved about $1,200.00. I highly recommend Hoshizaki.

I replaced mine in my freezer. It’s only ~ $100 and an easy fix

I see some of the children from the OT are started to migrate to the OB.

I know this isn’t what you are asking for but this is what I have been doing and it works great for ice for fishing.

Go to academy and buy yourself some of their 2 gallon buckets. They about $2 or $3 a piece.

Fill to a few inches from the top and freeze them.

Turn up side down inside a 5 gallon bucket. A little spray from the hose pipe and the block of ice pops right out. A few of these will go a long way last a lot longer on our hot summer days.

What kind of cups do you use that can fit that big arse piece of ice?

Evidently they all suck now. My parents house had an under counter one when they moved in sometime in the mid 90's. It finally gave out a couple years ago, they have been through 2 since then.

This place getting too much like the OT. Just giving some suggestions for making block ice for fishing trips on short notice. He referenced using 200 lbs for trips. Obviously I am only talking about fishing trips and not household use.

I had a Scotsman for 18 years in our farm shop. It was a 350lb machine. Ended up buying another Scotsman about a month ago. It’s a 400lb machine hope it lasts as long as the last one. If you descale then about twice a year they will last a long time. Both the units I have had are air cooled.

Here is the head unit and I kept my old bin.

Im planning to buy one for my camp and I think this is the brand I am going to go with. It will be on a landing under my camp, so it will be outside, but protected from direct rain etc... Did the company you buy yours from deliver and install it?

Rig some type of secondary air filter over the units filter and a good water filter if you have it outside.

We have had a Hoshizaki in our boat shed for about 4 years nick on wood it has been super solid for us. We run two water filters on it and change them regularly. Air filter also needs to be cleaned regularly.

Other than that it’s on a 750 lb bin and in 36 hours on the summer it will fill it.

What sort of secondary air filter do you suggest?

Any type of washable filter you can attach over the units filter. It'll keep the coils much cleaner and make it easier on you. We attached ours with Velcro.

We use something like this.
