I just saw a hawk hovering in mid air

He was over a gain elevator about 125' up. Wings cupped and not moving I guess the wind was strong enough to keep him aloft. I watched him not move for 30 seconds as I drove by, cool to see...

In California they had a lot of some bird, hawk or otherwise, that would hover, then dive.

Pretty fricking cool.

It was up near Elton and the wind was blowing pretty good. If I would have had my good camera I would have snapped a couple of pics but photos with my iphone would have been worthless...

Yeah the wind may be blowing 5 or 10 mph on the ground, but 20 or 30 in certain places on top of the elevator.

I was in my back yard right at dark last night when I looked up to see my BMC chasing a small gray hawk across the yard. I didn't get a good enough look at it but first impression was Kite. It was flying about four feet off the ground and apparently either didn't know the dog was about to get him or did know it and was fricking with him. But the dog was right on him and closing before he got to the fence. Dog missed him by about a foot.

Not something you see every day.
