How I found it...

After a clean up...

It says "stainless" on the blade where the tang goes into the handle, but I'm having trouble with the last few spots. I'm kinda sketchy on whether I should hit it with steel wool or rotary wire brush on a drill.

Also, what should I use to stain or seal the handle? It's very dry.

Any suggestions?

Steel wool, or drop that knife in some vinegar for about 3 days. Pull it out and dip it in a baking soda/water solution. Wipe the rust clean off.

Just check it every day. If you can wipe the rust off with a finger after 24hrs its good to go.

The clean up I did was just water and a plastic brissle brush I use for dirty dishes. I'll try soaking it like you said.

I was on some public property scouting around and the blade was jabbed in the dirt all the way to the handle. I figured some kid left it on accident. (I got serious whoopings for stuff like that as a kid)

I'd want y'all to do the same for me if I ditched a "dirty knife".

Sounds like the morning after a really bad night.

Good find. Looks a lot like a Winchester brand knife I have. It wasn't very expensive, and wouldn't surprise me to be the type NWTF might mass stamp. The one I have is a good knife.

Yeah, I was hoping it was a schrade like a DU knife I have, but the only thing stamped on it is the word "stainless".

It's heavy and still has a good edge on it. It was more dirt than rust. Other than that the wood on the handle was extremely dried out.

It was right next to a big tree. Can't figure out if a turkey hunter lost it this spring or how long it's been there.

It's better than finding a pink dildo and cologne.

Spend some time rubbing that handle with Tung oil.

This is the knife I referred to earlier. Obviously it's the gut hook model, but otherwise looks similar enough to possibly be the same series

Don't leave it in vinegar for a long time or it might etch it. Dilute the vinegar w water.

Soak it in mineral oil. That's what I use on my wood handled knives.
