I did not believe ammunition prices could go much higher, yet they continue to climb.

When I bought 1000 rounds of 5.56 two months ago for $379, I thought I was being robbed. SGAmmo just posted a 1000 round case of 5.56 Wolf Gold for $580.

They posted a 1000 round case of 9mm Sellier & Bellot last week for $400 and they sold out within an hour.

How much higher can these prices possibly go before people stop buying it as soon as it hits the shelf?

I only use SGAmmo as a benchmark because they're a huge online retailer and don't typically seem to be price gougers.

Supply and demand, used vehicles and used boat prices are sky rocketing. I do need a bit more 9mm and it has been tough to find.

People need to stop panic buying. Kamala being the VP just destroyed any chance of a Biden victory and this riot shite will eventually stop.

The reason you're seeing this is because the demand is being driven, for the first time in a long time, by people who are relatively new to firearms. The prices don't make sense to people who already had enough ammo stashed away for years of range time. But for someone who just bought their first firearm, that initial box of 100 rounds represents the difference between owning a fancy paperweight vs. a viable form of self defense. That same box of 100 rounds doesn't carry the same value to you or me. It's just an extra trip to the range one day down the road.

This. I'd venture to guess that most of the ammo being bought by new gunowners is considered (by them) as functional self-defense ammo, whether they're Gold Dots or FMJ. They want something that goes bang, and one of the first things you learn online is to make sure the gun functions well with the ammo. People stick to FMJ for that reason, and will try out JHP when they get the chance. Range use, other than just to get familiar with it, isn't in the discussion.

Fwiw, I wouldn't be terrified of having to use FMJ myself. I do have some good defensive loads, but in a pinch I'd not hesitate to use whatever I have. Remember, placement trumps just about everything else.

For future reference, yes, stock up when prices are good. And the next time there's a run on toilet paper or bottled water (hurricane season's coming), be sure to get whatever ammo you can afford, if the prices are decent.

I should buy 50k in ammo when the price returns to normal and sit on it until it spikes again

It’s crazy. Like, how much fricking ammo do some of you people need?

Leave some for me, dammit.

What I don't get is how some dealers like MidwayUSA & Sportsman's Guide seem to never get re-stocked, while others do. Plus don't even get me started on shotguns. They've been non-existent now for months.

Sportsman Guide never get restocked but when they do it’s practically pre-COVID pricing. They’re one of the few who hasn’t jumped into another orbit.

I don’t claim to fully know how the Ammo market functions, it just amazes me that it’s higher now than it was following Floyd and Atlanta. It seems to have taken a sharp spike in the last week.

Check sportsman’s guide early (7-8:00am) and that’s when they normally show some ammo in stock. Picked up 2,000 fmj 223 for 600 with the free shipping week before last. Couldn’t NOT get it, but as soon as I checked, maybe an hour later they were OOS again. Didn’t last long.

Yeah they were offering Russian steel cased 9mm & .223 at pre-panic prices with a late-October delivery, the other day...Check out the WikiArms smartphone app....They seem to keep it updated.

posted this in another thread early this week or last. Good friend of mine owns a gun shop.

Last week of two he ordered 4 14,000 round drums of 5.56 direct from Winchester for some customers.

$4800 each.

They could not give him a timeframe for delivery.

Another customer that work at the Remington, or winchester ammo factory in Oxford, MS told him that they were producing 2.5mm rounds of 9mm a day and were 13 mths behind.

Welp. Looks like I can shift ammo $ to my can fund and have that by the time ammo prices come back down

You laugh, but that's VERY real. I expect the can for my .300BLK to be out of jail in about 5 more months. I do not expect that I will reliably find subs at a price below 80 cents a round by then.

I went to the original Bass Pro in Memphis (not the Pyramid) at the beginning of turkey season for some boxes of turkey shells. In the roped off line snaking through the store to buy guns, I spoke to two different guys I know who I never would have expected to see buying guns based on their prior stance on guns. It was crazy that just about the only ammo they actually had in stock was turkey shells, I felt like the only person who was there to buy what was actually in season for hunting purposes
