How would you target big trout in Louisiana?

I’m talking about 20”+ fish. I mostly fish the east side and I want to start planning trips to just hunt bigger trout.

Seems like I’ve caught most of my bigger fish just off the MRGO. I’ve also heard of people catching big trout very deep into Delacroix/hopedale. You would think that they would stay I’m closer to salty waters but maybe that doesn’t matter in the winter?

I figured that I would probably have to fish areas that don’t get as much boat traffic. Instead of looking for places in the marsh that consolidate fish I would have to look for places that bigger fish could hunt bait.

I happen to have a giant trouser trout that hasn’t been targeted in decades. Ladies get the heavy tackle and swing by SJP

Have caught my PB in winter in Delacroix on grass banks. These size are very far and few between though. Maybe the changes upcoming will help. Not enough people releasing big trout here compared to other areas.

Deep water nearby, the more rocks the better, stealth, topwater/suspending baits, big live baits free lined

My biggest were off of oyster beds in the bay. Carolina rig with a cocahoe.

Slow going but nice fish.

Large fish aren't traveling a whole lot. I'd stay outside. Rock and shell structures. Large swimbaits. Not a numbers game.

Some of the biggest trout I've ever caught have been from under the Causeway. Just hope you can stand the noise.

My biggest is on the causeway. Very noisy but can produce beautiful fish.

Lake Charles and obviously Venice are your more consistent choices,

Bigger baits, like live pogey, croaker, mullet, etc...

When posting up on your spot I usually toss out one pole with a large bait hooked up either free line, cork or Carolina rigged. Then fish my artificial or live bait at the standard size to catch numbers. The cool thing is if/when you get a bite on that pole it is very exciting as you likely have something bigger connected.

Not LA, but my biggest every year are consistently over shells in May on Mirrodines or live croakers.

They get into some big ones in the winter under the bridges on Lake P. Mostly trolling but other methods work. If you want a consistent big bite go to another state. Louisiana has volume but doesn't always have the size the other states have.

See this is what really confuses me. I know people who have caught really big trout very deep into Delacroix. I’m talking freshwater ponds with bluegill. I think the big trout in LA just stay away from all the obvious spots. That would help to make sense of how they get so big

The 2 biggest trout I’ve caught were in deep Delacroix in the same spring a couple weeks of part. Hard baits edge of grass beds.

Look for some articles/interviews with Steve Shook. As far back as the 1990’s when I fished heavily, he was the master of trophy trout. Over the years I’ve read a couple articles where he gets very specific about bait and technique. I’ve forgotten all the tips, but hit the google machine and you’ll find some.

I don’t fish Louisiana often but this is definitely true in Florida. You rarely catch small trout and big trout together. Now you may catch 18-20” fish with the bigger fish.

But just because there’s a lot of trout doesn’t mean you will catch a bigger trout. Not that much different then reds really, you almost never have a big bull running with slots. But trout are different in many ways and don’t school up.

But the benefit of winter fishing is there is less live bait, so I think the bigger trout are a little easier to target as they don’t have as much variety.

ETA: I’ve always been told and read online big trout lovers croakers and hate them because they eat trout eggs. So they are great winter big trout bait.

This is another myth. Trout don’t make beds and defend them. They broadcast their eggs and leave. They have no concern about what happens to their eggs once they have been expelled

They eat croaker because it’s a small fish they can fit in their mouths
