I am planning on going this Wednesday. Forecast is calling for 10mph south winds. I know a north wind is better for surf fishing right? Is any south winds not worth trying it?

Was planning on launching in Fourchon and starting at the barges and work my way towards elmers isle. If the forecast is accurate would I be better off fishing in Timbalier Bay instead? Trying to learn the area better. TIA

If it's actually 10 you might be ok
Problem is that's usually 20 and that's gonna be rough
I heard good reports from timbalier bay but it really all depends on what the wind wants to do

ETA i just checked the weather it says 5 mph north on Wednesday, which is perfect

I'd do Live shrimp @ fourchon barges if the wind allows. Then backside of timbalier if wind kicks up

I use Windfinder app and it has always been very good to me with wind and wave predictions.

Looks pretty good to me.

North lays down the surf when fishing the beach. South is a bit tougher.
With 10 mph winds you can expect 2 foot seas. If you wake up to 5-10 winds, it’ll be 1-2 foot seas. 5 or less is 1 foot.

Any channels or rivers that flow into the gulf you should pay close attention to the wind direction and not be on the “dirty “ side. For example avoid a SW wind when fishing the Fourchon barges east of Belle Pass.

Thanks everyone.

Out of curiosity why is a southwest wind bad for the barges? Is it the water coming out of Bell Pass dirtying up the area where barges are located?

Well too much wind is a bad thing but apparently so is too little. At least for me it was. I've never seen the gulf as calm as it was yesterday. There were hardly any breakers. We tried elmers but had zero luck. Saw One surf fisher throw back a small speck and one guy on boat next to us caught a big red. We quickly moved to the barges and caught 20 or so specks there. Some really nice sizes too. Then we headed to some close in rigs and caught some mangrove snapper. Had a cobia break us off too. All in all a good day.

I was there Tuesday and the weather was great... But I didn't do much off the beach.
