My wife wants to get a dedicated ice maker for our new kitchen. But for the cost ($2k+), it seems to me that we could get a full sized real deal ice maker in the garage. How much do they cost?

A full size ice maker is amazing if you know you will use it enough. If you do a lot of fishing/hunting and are always buying ice, you will make your money back in not so long run.

Look at manitowoc or hoshizaki brand. You can find some decentl deals on used ones too

We have an ice maker in our kitchen/bar area. I love it!! Ours is a Whirlpool cost right at $1000, makes 20 lbs of ice a day of the little cubes. Haven't used ice from our big fridge in 10 years.

Get the under counter in the kitchen. You will use it constantly. Don’t get one in the garage as your primary, do you really want to go to the garage every time she wants an ice water? For parties, you will either have to fill a cooler and put it on the floor in the kitchen or haul an ice bucket in and out every 15 minutes.

I just put the Hoshizaki Sonic ice undercounter model in my kitchen during the renovation.

My FIL has one or two for some reason.

Just be aware that they break.

Model #? What’s your thoughts on it so far?

My wife really wants the “Sonic Ice”, and I know Hoshizaki is a great brand but when I first looked they were really expensive. I have selected a Whirlpool model but I can switch out to the Hoshizaki if I know which model and costs.

Go with the wife's idea and then bag up the ice and keep it in your outdoor freezer for hunting and fishing

Don't do the sonic ice. We have one and I wish we would have gone with the cubes/squares like we previously had. I find the sonic ice to be a pain in the arse because it melts so fast, it's the worst ice for a cocktail too. Also, be prepared because they always break, but they're awesome to have.

The hoshizakis don't break as much. For the record.

You can get a Summit one with a pump for around a grand.

Unless you entertain a lot they are really a waste of money.

Just make sure there is a filter on the supply line and you do the cleanings regularly. Scale build up will kill these things. I have already replaced one and the new one is about 4 years now and is making noise and needs to be taken in for a full service and pulled totally apart for cleaning.

We had a very similar experience with ours.

Consider one in the garage or porch. When they leak, they can cause extensive damage to wood floors. Fairly common.
They’re expensive, but wonderful. At times, you can find used units.

For the price of an under counter flake ice machine you could put a 150 lb per day unit with a 300 lb bin in your garage.... depends on the main use. If you hunt and fish a decent amount an ice maker makes life easy

I put one in my wet-bar for $300. It gets the job done.

I had an under counter ice maker in a unheated space. The plastic water solenoid would freeze and burst if you had freezing temperatures for more than 5-6 hours.

My cousin had this happen to his few month brand new house. Wasn't just a leak though, it was a gusher that required all new flooring.

dedicated ice makers are just a status symbol for most people.

While cool to have, that shite is just a damn money pit...during the holidays or when you have a party, just drop a couple of bags in an ice chest and be done with it....

As many have said, they break alot. My dad has one and it is the only appliance that they keep an extended warranty on.
They have an under counter model. It is nice, but not really big enough to fill an icechest.
