This is a pic from I-49 of a barrel hung about 30 feet up in a tree. It's on Wallace bayou right at the caddo/desoto parish line. If you go out on Wallace lake, you'll see them throughout the lake. My dad said in the old days people would climb up in these barrels so they could shoot high flyers.

No thanks for me, I prefer to stay on the ground or in the boat.

I feel like I'm about as hardcore of a duck hunter as a sensible person needs to be. We've been hunting in a pretty easy ricefield setup for a few years now but that hasn't always been the case. I'm not getting in a frickin 55 gallon drum in a tree though...

I've had ducks come in to lite and bounce/slide on ice but I don't think I could enjoy hunting while hanging in a barrel.

Course, we don't hafta. We have something they didn't - tree inch shells.

You can find these in the backwaters of the mighty Mississippi if you look hard enough. I'm of the husky version of duck hunters so I am on record saying not I.

Having given more thought to this, I bet it was just a matter of the method they chose.

Here's why. In "the old days" people let 'em pile up and pot shot them by the sacks full. No need to go through all that trouble to shoot the high flyers when you could get where they came in flock after flock.

Just a thought.

I have never not made a hunt, due to a hangover, ice or inclement weather, but I'll be damned if I am gonna climb a tree.

I've broken ice more times that I can remember and have even fallen in the ice on an occasion. Hunted in pouring rain and hunted when I needed a thermacell.

I have never and never will hunt in a barrel in the top of a tree.

I'm all for going the extra mile..... But that's a little too far. Some of the best hunts are miserable at the time, but I don't try for miserable.

As far as conditions , our rice fields are easy. Now setting decoys everyday isn't easy
