How hard turning woods into cattle pasture.

So cleared land for a decent price is hard to come by especially in STT parish. However timber can be had for a little less but clearing 40 plus acres to turn it into to usable pasture is a bitch to say the least. Anyone done it? How hard and much money am I looking at if I try to go this route?

You're gonna turn woods into pasture in St Tammany? GFY guy
Find some pasture instead of ruining an already ruined part of the state

You can't sell the timber? There's no money in cows now

Which means now is the perfect time to buy heifers.

Its all POS pine, and will probably end up in Washington or tangi anyway.
Getting timber clear cut in stt thats not accessible to a state road is almost impossible.

+-1500.00 per acre if it's not swampy or steep.

It's still a horrible idea and a dick move in a parish that has gotten wiped of trees. Do me a favor and go stand in the Bed, Bath, & Beyond parking lot on a Saturday, take a deep breath, and try to convince yourself it is beautiful. It's not.
If you do it, and the next guy does it, then the next guy, etc. the whole parish turns into Metairie. Somewhere else can handle a 40 being clear cut, or ever better, find a pasture not being used for anything. Once you clearcut and have cattle, it gets a hardpan and won't ever naturally grow trees again.
frick man, it's the woods. Gotta take care of them

I'd rather him make a pasture as opposed to another subdivision. Better yet, reclaim a savanna to raise cattle.

Buy you some land and preserve the woods. frick you for trying to tell a man what to do with his property and money.

There are plenty of pastures not being used. You keep taking away woods, and taking away woods, what do you have? Nothing. frick that. I don't want Louisiana to look like Oklahoma. To me, this is the most beautiful place in the world, and should be taken care of responsibly. Maybe you DGAF if the whole state turns into a parking lot, but some people do.
You can't just clearcut an area, raise cattle, and expect trees to magically grow back when you leave. That's it. They're gone. They won't come back naturally. Simple as that. It's a big decision, and made more important because it is in a place that had dwindling amounts of forested areas. He can do what he wants, but should understand what he is doing and the reprocussions.
Eh, I was gonna say something, but you're too stupid and small minded to understand it anyway

You ever walked through woods and found an old barbed wire fence?

Don't listen to him, guy buy yourself some woods and build the next state empire building on it if you want.
How old are the trees and how many of them? That would help a lot with the cost assessement

The bigger problem iare government programs that offer landowners money to convert pasture/cropland to being put in trees and classified as wetlands.

Read the last sentence of my post
And no, I've never been in any woods anywhere. It was never a career for me or anything of the sort

I'm with you on the wanting to leave woods, woods part. But this statement is just total bullshite.
The only reason you don't see trees growing "naturally" in the middle of a pasture is because there aren't any seed trees close by. Because it's the middle of a pasture and everything. But rest assured, you can walk along and step on acorns and pecans and cypress balls that you throw out and the like and grow whatever you want. It ain't got shite to do with a hard pan.

Sorry, I stopped reading after you said trees can never grow in cow pastures.
