How big does a pond need to be to stock?
Posted by NOLAGT on 2/24/19 at 12:05 pm00
I have a 8k gallon koi pond....is that enough volume to stock with some game fish? I’m assuming perch and brim would work...bass?
Koi are nice but my turtles eat them every now and then. And I want to go fishing and fry some fresh fish
I know the turtles would eat them too but I can put some structure to give them shelter.
Filtration is a non issue imo.

What size is the pond?? Length..width..average depth
No there are some left.
It’s roughly 25x18’ and It’s about 3-4’ deep.
It’s not overly huge but I was wondering if they are pellet fed with structure could I crank out some bream at least.
Stuck my phone in for a few pics. Fish are about a foot or so. Have to do some clean up around the drain.

Well I have a 7500 swimming pool and it’s pretty small. Spread out to about 3’ depth, that’d still be kind of small. You could definitely have some fish in there but I don’t know if it’d support all that many.
Yea it’s not real big in the way of a normal stocked pond. Just trying to liven it up a bit lol.
I may throw some in anyway and see what they do. I put a cpl hundred rosey red minnows bout over time the koi and turtles finished them off. And probably some birds lol.

I know you’d rather try putting some bass or bream in there but I’d try channel cats. Get you a couple hundred fingerlings and see how they do

I thought about that but then I wondered if they would start eating the turtles lol. One is big but some are mouth size still for a big cat. One of them I have had for 18-19 years.

Pretty much trashy I know but I don’t care. I think it would be funny. The pond is for the turtles first, everything else is for fun. It has a big filtration system and I feed pellets a lot so why not fatten up some bream?
3 of the 4. Biggest is a female I had the longest. The one to the left probably 12 years. To the right was a resent pickup from someone my wife works with. Other one is a baby I found in the pond a few years ago.

That is cool.
I could get drunk sitting on the porch watching those turtles.

Has happened plenty The two older ones follow you around like a dog waiting to be fed.
Yes some but just the big gal. If I don’t keep her fed they are in jeopardy even in that big pond. If they get sick or slow down they can be toast when she’s hungry. Most of the time I’ll just see a missing scale or a part of the fin missing. It’s uaualy pretty calm most the time.
So where would one buy some nice bream around the Laffy area? I don’t want to catch wild ones and introduce any unwanted parasites. I may quarenteen them anyway depending how they look.
Cpl under water shots of of two of the turtles. Big one was a quarter when I got her lol.
