Home defense pistol recommendations update: bottom of OP

Never been one to go buy my own pistol, although I have shot thousands of rounds through my fathers 1911’s, Beretta Nano, and a good friends Glock.
I have a price range of $200-400 (looking for used).
I’m unsure what model Glock he has but I believe it’s a 19.
I have looked at a Springfield XD40 in .45 cal as well as a Glock 17 gen 4. Both looked to be in really good condition and in my price range.
Despite my father having a Beretta Nano in the army tan, I also am tempted to jump on that deal. Comes with the extended hand grip clip, tan, and probably the gun I’ve shot best over time because of the weight I assume.
What do y’all think about those 3 guns for home defense? I’m talking under my mattress type gun.
My 4th option is a Taurus .357 4” barrel which is actually what I wanted specifically but I feel it was priced high. $399 plus tax. Unless it’s a double action that seems steep. I’ll have to double check when shopping again.
I prefer a revolver because 1. I don’t need 9-11 shots to shoot an intruder 2. It will shoot EVERY time I pull the trigger. No jams. That’s my biggest concern with a semi-auto.
Is the Nano pretty strictly concealed carry or would it be fine in a in home situation?
Should I stick to a full size?
Caliber preferences?
The Springfield is easily my top choice but I want some more opinions.
My question for every gun is if I shoot it 1000 times, how many aren’t hanging up.
Thanks for any and all help guys
LONG UPDATE
Update : expressed my fears of a hooligan or anybody lurking around my house and how I had once heard my Lab absolutely lose it in the middle of the night and there I was, defending myself as I peek outside holding a 32” baseball bat in one hand and my dick in the other. I was screwed if anything happened.
Told him I liked some .357 revolvers I had seen and I had decided if I got one I’d shoot a .38 +P bullet. He walks to the safe, grabs a Rossi .38 double action that I start remembering I shot at a fleeing the trap raccoon with that gun as a youngin. He explains how he acquired it, somebody had let the double action get gunned up and he and my uncle stripped it down moved some things around and it’s a shooter. I said “....well I’m not sure I want to protect myself with a gun that you got because it didn’t work...” he quickly agreed.
He then grabs his literally new Glock “well look at my glockwithout a bullet through it”. This man found some sale at Academy during hunting season for a Glock 19 in .45acp & a heritage rough rider .22, for around “$500” he estimates he got the glock for about $300 new minus the .22. I nearly shite myself.
He finally asks, well, what do you feel the most comfortable with? Told him I really shot best with the Beretta Nano and a Remington 1911 we’ve had for a few years. He quickly reminded me how much that 1911 cost him (I was there when he impulsively bought it), and went and grabbed the Nano, chambered one up, holstered it, and handed it over and said “just start squeezin’, got 8 in it.” As I walked out the door, he finished with “if I ever see that damn gun dirty or it gets stolen, you better start buying guns because every one in that safe will go to your nephew” .....well thanks Dad..
Reupdate: went and shot the Nano. I’ll just say: I wouldn’t want to be getting shot at by me.

Should be able to get a good used ruger speed six or security six for that price. I got a 3" gp-100 I'll sell you for $400

How many times have you had jams on a semi auto?

I love these statements like these. Semi auto pistols these days are ridiculously reliable. That's why military and law enforcement all use semi autos, and if it's good enough for the guys fighting for our country then it's good enough for under your mattress.
To answer your question, in that price range I would look at the M&P 2.0 9mm full size. They are on sale right now at buds for $389.00 which is a really good price for a really good gun.

chances are you never need 1 bullet for home defense in your life.
talking in theories, if i ever get holed up in my house with possible 1 or 2 intruders, i would be fricking pissed if i have a revolver in my hand knowing i only have 5 or 6 shots to protect my family if needed. I got a 9mm with a 19 + 1 capacity.

They are more failure prone than revolvers.

Sig P229 was my lifesaver! That's why I'm selling my FNP -9 DA?SA and considering another Sig. Of course if I had grabbed the FN I'd feel strongly about that one. A deputy was overheard saying "We need him on our side!" that night.

I figured you would show up for a good ole revolver vs. semi auto debate. I never said they were not more failure prone than a revolver. I said they are ridiculously reliable these days.

My home defense pistol is a full size 1911. I have a S&W .357 revolver in the gun vault, that’s how much I trust this gun and my ability to hit with it.

I’d go with a Judge. Shoots .410 shells as well and there’s some mean home defense shells you could purchase to go with it.
If you’re looking for good priced pistols, check out aimsurplus.com. They have some really nice law enforcement trade ins right now. Sig Sauer P226’s, among others.

Have never had my buddies Glock jam out of 1000 shots. My fathers Remington 1911 has jammed more than I can count.
What’s the massive hate with revolvers? I don’t care to spin the cylinder or throw it, but if you need more than 6 shots to get somebody out of your house you’re already screwed.
I did hear the M&P 2.0 was really nice. Had an upgraded trigger that was bragged about.
Anybody have any experience with the Springfield XD40?

Like someone else said, modern semi-autos are super reliable.
So you know exactly how many shots you'll need in an encounter?

The most likely cause of failure in firearms in bad ammo, which revolvers are suceptible to as well. In most instances, with regards to the revolver, this will most likely only inhibit your abiliy to reload. Those who think you will only ever need 6 bullets in a gun fight disregard this possibility. Side note, if you are preparing for the minute possibility you will be in a gun fight you should also prepare for the minute possibility you will need more than 6 rounds. No one is going to stop shooting at you while you try to use fine motor skills in a high stress situation to insert bullets into the cylinder. Anyway,That said, there is a reason nearly every LE department, who trust their gun for their lives and who are way more likely to encounter the Thug POSes you are looking to defend yourself against, have moved away from revolvers. The semi-auto Glocks/Smiths/HKs/etc., not SIGs , offer way more advantage over revolvers than revolvers do over semi-autos. From shootability to capacity to size and weight.

Any home defense weapon should have a flashlight mounted on it. There are revolvers out there with pic rails but this is much more easily done with a semi-auto.

Glock 19. Streamlight. 33 round mag.
Because I want the intruder to know they ducked up.

If that’s your price range, Canik.
I have the tps elite and multiple ppl who are other brand fan boys have told me they love it. 15 rounds, butter trigger, and is cheap.

I have shot thousands and thousands of rounds out of semi-auto pistols, and have only had a few problems. The problems were either self-induced, or limited to a specific gun that needed to be broken in or whatever. In no way should semi-autos be labeled unreliable.
Second point....you shoot at me 6 times, and you have a brick. I shoot at you 6 times, and I still have 10 more bullets.
Best choice: Glock 20. You don't want to risk your family's lives over a couple hundred bucks
