I have some flower beds with mulch in the yard and the grass has started to grow into them. I need to do a good edging job on them and want to cut down into the grass some to make sure all runners are severed and then put some new mulch up. I was thinking about getting a weedeater attachment with those thick plastic blades.

Just got back from home depot and found this one Rino-Tuff but on the package it says do not use in vertical position... Anyone ever use one of these attachments vertically? What's the reasoning behind this? Is it because you might use it near concrete and there's a good chance of breaking the blades? I want this only to cut into grass around beds, no concrete. Are they just being cautious?

what size line does your weedeater use. My .095 will chew up any normal grass and create a nice edge.

If you have a straight shaft weedeater, just turn the weedeater over and go to town.

Used to edge the shite outta flower beds like that in my landscape days. It's not hard at all and does a very good job.

Unless I'm not understanding your question correctly.

.095 as well. My dirt is pretty hard, I really was wanting something to just tear down into it. I've tried with the line and the results are just not quite what I want.

Mine swivels in the vertical position, so actually doing the edging is not a problem, it's getting something that will really take a bite out of the grass and dirt.

A shovel will also give you the look are tring for.

If you have already bought the attachement use it. The issue is if the blades chip or break they could come at your face with it turned vertical.

If you are edging concrete you can not beat this:

If you are going to use the line trimmer to do your edging make sure to wear saftey goggles and use this:

I haven't purchased it yet because of that warning label.

Not edging concrete, I already have an edger similar to the one you posted for that.

I always used a regular spool feed head and regular line.

Use plenty throttle, don't aim it at anything with windows. shite will be flying.

While on the subject, what is y'all's technique for not getting all the clipping in the mulch while edging around the beds? I have black mulch and it shows like crazy.

Haha, very first time I was edging with the weed eater at our current house which was only 4 days old, there was a piece of mortar from construction that went flying into our back door (full glass) and shattered it. At that moment, I learned to always point towards the fence.

Just use a regular ol weedeater. Make sure to keep it at high RPMs. Also, be careful where you're aiming.

I'll use the blower after from a distance and it gets a good bit of it off. Just not all cause you can't get close. My mulch is dark brown and after a few hours in the heat, the little that is left shrivels up and blends right in.

Bring the rpms down and walk backwards along the flower bed, making sure to throw them away from the bed.

I'm using an attachment that is similar to the four cord trimmer attachment. This thing is giving me fits. I started using some .080 trimmer line cut into 6" pieces, and this was lasting about 45 seconds while trying to trim grass around concrete.

I upgraded to the .105 trimmer line and now I only get 2 minutes before I have to change out the cord. The cord is breaking off from the body and I'm losing 5" pieces of line at a time.

Anybody have a suggestion? I use the straight trimmer in the front to edge the concrete and grass and I have no problems in the back edging along the fence.

I have a small yard and I'm spending more time changing trimmer line than actually edging.

You need to use a straight edge shovel to create a small trough around the flowerbed Then you can easily weed eat around the edge of that and round up as needed. You won't have to keep up with it near as much as weed eating alone.

be less "aggressive" on the throttle. Chord will last much longer if it's at speed fast enough to edge the grass, but not wide open. also take more practice than you'd expect to hold a line with a weedeater.
