The best solution? Hire a landscaper and have the lawn dug up and replanted with something else.

Wait till spring. Your whole yard is about to get brown anyway.

Give some info

-what type of grass is there?
-under trees?
-were pets in yard prior to you owning?
-How big are bare spots?

Weed and feed in the spring and sod what's bare.

If he's in st Petersburg he has plenty of growing weather left. Little fertilizer and proper mowing and water.

Unles he wants instant. Then just get some sod.

This & wait & see what problems you have then. It's too late IMO to start this year.
