Help me fill the cooler - Rigs off Grand Isle

I've only fished rigs a couple of times but i'm looking for some advice to keep me from getting skunked after driving 3 hours to put a line in the water.
Tips for hooking up with mangrove? My understanding is you chum the hell out of the water and toss shrimp with a very small weight. Light/thin line due to their eyesight ability and no need to fish very deep cause they hang out high in the water column.

Get 100 lbs of shad and grind that up for your chum. With med to heavy spinning tackle and live croakers, cast that into the rigs. Try to fish up current of the rig. Oh, use the smallest circle hook you can find. Don't get caught using J hooks.

Yeah chumming them up will work and i would skip the weight and free line a piece of chum with the hook hidden. I have had success that way. Also if you have live larsh or croakers that will be deadly on them as well. There aren't many fish that will pass up live bait. You may even get a few lemon fish while fishing mangroves. If you are within the 9 mile limit i would drop a deep line and see if you can get a few red snapper as well.

You don't have to use circle hooks on live bait. I do it anyway, though, just to minimize the amount of tackle we have to bring.

Any time rig fishing no matter what, J hooks are outlaw.

Nice to know if your being serious. Less gut hooking I assume. 15-20 lb line and leaders ehh?

J-hooks are illegal for reef fish. I believe you can be cited just for having them on board, but don't quote me on that.

Well i use the small live bait hooks not circle hooks. LINK
medium to heavy spinning, at least 30# braid with 25-50# leaders pending on the size and temperament. no weight. you are basically free lining, let it fall like chum wood, they can tell if you have a tight line.
Chum the fish up.... CHUM, DO NOT FEED! I check each side with chum. If there is a current i go to the down current side and l throw to the eddie behind the big column.
I have had the best success this summer with just cut pogie(hide the hook well) but sometimes they want live croakers. they are real picky at times.
first 3 seconds are key, you hooked that long you should be boating it.
a couple trips this summer.
if you want me to go and show you i will!

When fishing for mangroves do you back the boat off like when fishing for snapper/amberjack if you hook up?

No, you don't want to spook any fish that you brought to the surface with chum.
10 fish limit set for them. Been that way a long time.

You can catch mangrove at the rocks in the pass

Too short for the limit. There are a shite load there in Sept. Just throw a live shrimp under a cork on the rocks and reel them in.

quote:we sometimes tie up if there are a lot that come up but a lot of times we just keep the boat near the platform. no need to back off, they arent going to pull that hard, you have have to get them away in the first 3 seconds. they give up after that.

They can turn off just as fast as they turn on. We have been catching them every cast and before you know it they stop biting. You can see them come up to your bait smell it and turn around.

Tying up is for the birds, much better to get upcurrent

ive tried it all different ways and ive had the best success on the down current side, when there is a big current. there are pros and cons of each IMO.
