OB I need your help. My father in law gave me a double barrel 12 gauge shotgun. Pic attached. The only markings I can find on it are that it is a Springfield and right below it says J. Stevens Arms Company.
It has a emblem of a dog carrying a duck on the stock. He didn't know the age of it, or how many years it had been since it had been shot. Can anyone tell what exactly it is by the picture? I don't see any other markings besides the Springfield name.
Also, since it likely hasn't been shot in years, how do I make sure it's in good enough condition to be shot? He gave me some shells he had with it, but if they are 10 years or more old, are they still good to shoot.
Any advice on how to identify and prepare this gun to shoot would be appreciated.

Me either but I bet it kicks like a mule.

wildcat, don't worry about the shells being 10 years old. You're good to go.

Stevens Springfield 5100 with 30" barrel.

It's not worth very much at all. Would be cool to shoot, though.

Take it to a gunsmith and have him clean it and check for any issues. The shells will be fine.

Stevens, they bought out Fox in the 1930's and have made a number of doubles over the years. The gun was problaby built in the 60's or 70's. If you take the barrels off the flats will have markings with additional info, much of it will probably be in code. Check the barrels for pitting and make sure the action lock up tight and it will be fine to shoot. Light loads only unless you hate your shoulder...

Looks like a nice home defense weapon to me.

Clean it up and unless there is excessive rusting somewhere, it should shoot fine.

Thanks guys, I knew you would come through. I was actually thinking about taking it somewhere since it's been so long since it has been shot, just to have it checked out well.

I will definitely hang on to it. It was a gift from my father-in-law (I'm his favorite son-in-law ).

I'm going to find someone to give it a thorough going over and if it 's good to shoot, I'm going to take it out and try it.

He gave me a box of Remington 2 3/4 inch ShurShot shells. They look like they are 20 years old..

Since you guys helped me to identify the gun as a Springfield 5100, I have found more info about them online.
I read one post about the Springfield name being discontinued in 1948. I really wonder how old it is now.

As someone mentioned, it doesn't appear to be worth much, but I now want to shoot it even more.
