Our lab just tested positive. Had been on Heartguard faithfully and never missed a dose. Looks like duck season will be a washout.

It could be a false positive. We had a rescue dog who tested "positive" at the shelter and when we brought him to begin treatment, they tested again at the vet and he was negative. We didn't believe it so we brought him to another vet who tested him and they found him to be negative too.

Although I have absolutely no idea how this happens or how common it may be.

I guess it's possible. This is our second dog to test positive, both on preventative. We must have some mutant mosquitos around here. Keeping them calm for a month is nerve wracking.

Labs? Definitely.

Might want to check into the Proheart injections. Twice a year.

Just order comfortis plus from australia.

It'll slowly kill them and he can be active in the meantime.

My 14 month old lab tested positive a month ago too. Got a second opinion because we are super attentive to heartworm preventative.
Both said he prob got as a puppy.
1st month is done. Now the second round of meds.
That first round kicked his arse and mine too.

Heartgard is ivermectin but is very low dose.I bought liquid at feed store and give it to my dogs 1/10 ml per 10 lbs.I calculated the dose and it was 150 x the dose in Heartgard tablets.
I’ve had a bunch of dogs over the years,Lab ,Lab mix and bunch of beagles.Never had one get heart worms nor did they get any other worms except tapeworms.
The Heartgard dose allows dogs to get other worms so now they have Heartgard Plus which is ivermectin plus pyrantel pamoate.
I gave my puppies 1/10 ml dose at 2 weeks old.
None of the collie breeds or collie mixes can take ivermectin.
My sil has a Seing Eye Dog and she gets a once a year shot for heart worms, has worked well for her. That might be best option for someone with only one or two dogs and stay in good grace with their vet.

Quit using heartguRd years ago due to heart worm resistance in Acadiana. Been on Pro- heart for 10 years or so with no issues.

If he/she is acting fine and not showing symptoms, you shouldn’t worry about it.

Lots of dogs have heartworms and never have any issues.

Just do the treatments in the spring.

I think youre overdosing by alot. The dose should be something around 1/100th of a ml total for a 40lb dog.

The concentration of 1% ivermectin is 10mg per 1ml. You are over dosing by A LOT. Now does it hurt the dog, i dunno. I use this that is diluted to the correct amount

If I was overdosing with ivermectin I never saw any harm.I would give 2 week old puppies 1/2 ml which was .5 mg,I never lost a puppy.
My beagles would typically live until 12-13 years old,my Lab and Lab mix lived until 14 years
I was very active with beagle people in Eunice,Church Point,Mamou area and that is the dose they all used, that is where I learned it.

Start the treatment tomorrow. Having been through this before with our previous lab, he'll be sore from the shots for a day or two. After that it will be a challenge keeping him calm. Vet said she would prescribe a sedative if needed.

It just occurred to me that this happened with our other lab in the year following a hurricane-Rita. Happened this time in the year following Laura. Maybe it brought a strain of mosquitos up from the coastal marsh.
