Like the tiltle says haven’t bought gun in many years
Just looking for sights I can go look at and do some research on prices.
Looking for pistol not sure of caliber yet.
Edit:
Thanks for the info..
Already have a 9mm looking for new caliber but really not much experience with them besides .22, 9mm and shotguns.
What caliber seems to be the easiest to get Ammo for?
Looking to spend around 600.

Buds Gun Shop
Edit: local FFL dealer will likely charge you $25-$40 to transfer the firearm. See if dealer can perhaps match the price in order for you to buy local. You’re gonna find out that most firearms are Out of stock
Search gunbroker.com and gunsamerica.com for more research on availability and price

Google whatever gun you want with “gun deals” behind it. You’ll get the cheapest options

Gun.deals
They will let you know what's in stock and the price all in one place. With plenty of options.

You want a pistol, and ammo, for $600 right now? Good luck
2 suggestions, if your google-fu is good:
Star Modelo Super, in 9mm Largo;
A Tokarev in 7.62x25mm.
Both are old guns, single action, all steel. That's fine, they were military issue, and tend to be reliable, if not the latest trend.
The Star is a Spanish pistol, if you can find one in 9x23 Largo, (this isn't 9x23 Winchester, that would probably kaboom your gun), you can then begin hunting down Largo ammo.
The Tokarev in it's native chambering should also easily handle 7.63 Mauser ammo (same dimensions, but lighter load), so you have 2 "native" options. Don't put Tok ammo in a Mauser, though.
Both guns are also capable of swapping in a 9mm barrel, if one is located, and shooting "regular" 9 without a hitch.
I know this for a fact.
Most times, it's cheaper to use the regular 9mm barrel and shoot "cheap 9mm"; but right now, if you dig around (not just search on wikiarms or gun deals), you can find "the other stuff" for cheaper than 9mm.
Some stuff is surplus, I've had better luck with Yugo or Romanian Tokarev than with Spanish Largo. The Tok always seems to shoot, the old Spanish stuff is somewhere around 90%.
There are also new manufactured ammo, from specialty shops... and the Largo I've shot from that is quite impressive. People also say 9mm Steyr will shoot in a Super, and a number of folks say 38 Super will too. Some claim it's too hot, but it seems like modern 38 Super is not loaded beyond what Largo was intended to be. Stay away from the +P stuff, you should be fine, as long as the gun can handle the semi-rim (some do, some might not).
For that matter, there's also 38 Super barrels for Tokarevs, if you can find one.
All just food for thought...

9mm probably easiest common pistol ammo to find. Avoid 380 and 38spl bc ammo is hard to find.
Academy sometimes has a variety of pistols in stock. Ammo is harder to find than a gun.

Uses them once and only once. Never again. Not worth it.

Now's not the best time to be looking.

Sportsmans (different from SOS) is good
Omaha is good
Classic Firearms
I've bought from Champion in College Station before and it was a really good experience. Not sure how big that store is but they've got a better online presence than most LGS type places.

I tried em all but ended up ordering from Simmons website. Quick shipping from Bastrop and good prices.
