Have y'all ever seen school of bull reds busting bait in open water?

I was out in timbalier bay in the cocodrie shipping channel heading to timbalier island and notice a huge school of what I assumed based on color were monster redfish, 50"+, have you guys ever seen this? If so how do you get up on them, they were traveling fast busting bait under seagulls but got spooked before I could get in casting range even though my engine was in idle.

Yes. I would take an angle and set up where they seemed to be heading. Whole mullet free spool in to the schools.
Usually the last weekend of October in Grand Isle and Fourchon in the passes will be thousands and thousands and will hit anything. When they’re stacked in the passes I just used fresh cut mullet. Filet each side of the mullet but leave skin and scales on. Hook through narrow part of the filet at the bottom, hook goes in meat side, comes out skin/ scale side

Yes. Several times in the GOM.
One time we were heading for Ship Shoal Light to fish tarpon. This was about 1972.
We were ran from Cococdrie through Whiskey Pass and were about six miles out as dawn broke.
We could see three schools of them tearing the water up hitting pogies. The schools were huge probably a couple of acres each.
At that time we used those big Pet 21 spoons.( Lance (Coon) had not invented the CoonPop yet. )
We dropped two lines and the spoons would make a few turns and a bull red would be on. We were fishing with 6/0 reels and 120#Dacron so we could horse them in.
Before we knew it we had about 35 of them in the boat. It was fun.
Then we realized we had ruined our tarpon trip because we caught all those damn redfish.
We came in,filled the truck with fish and proceeded to give every road side fisherman we saw between Cocodrie and Houma a couple of reds. We made their day.

Damn, I'm leaving Monday for 3 weeks of work in Portland Oregon. normally I have mullet/pinfish in the livewell but I I was with the family chasing birds all day for an easy trout bite so all I had was trout gear ready. I would love to go hunt then in the passes with my big boy gear. Are they still fairly common in mid-late November/December? Next time I'll be ready if I'm going for them. Also saw some smaller schools about 300' of the timbalier coast.

Yea, this school was only about 100' wide. I had a large sliver diamond spoon on an 8000 size battle 2 but like I said, I couldt get on the damn things without spooking them.

Sometimes you have to do like Quesidilla said. Angle up ahed of them, stop and let them come to you.
We lucked out because they were so intent on hitting the menhaden. The pogie spotter airplane was circling over us and three pogie boats were coming over the horizon as we were fishing.
It was infested with pogies and reds that day. The three pogie boats made sets right near us as we were finishing up.

I've came across them in Lake Ponchartrain and it's pretty awesome. Anything you throw is fair game to them

Yep. Red Tide is the term for it.

I usually throw old useless baits at them since they will hit anything when they are schooling like that. Have witnessed this in Lake Salvador.

Back in the early '80s, I witnessed The Red Tide in the GOM a couple miles out of Tiger Pass.

Wasn't open water but years ago my buddy and his brother and I were heading down the ship channel south of Hackberry at dawn when we came to the point where the ship channel meets big lake. We noticed hundreds of sea gulls and many pelicans flying around said point and lots just sitting on the bank there. We pulled around to the south of the point , trolled up to about 30 yds and began to tear up the reds. Not 50" but didn't catch a one under 30". Lasted about 2 hrs until a tanker came thru. Every cast was a catch, with anything you could throw out there. It was around this time of the year. Mullet was the bait they were chasing. We called it the Hunt for Red October.

They were monsters, every one of them had to have been 50" inches. They were busting the bait so hard they were breaching half a foot out the water. Absolutely epic!!!

Seen it many times. Way back when purseiners (sp?) were fishing for reds, we would follow the spotter plane and catch a few before the boats with the nets got to the school. Won many a rodeo by doing this.

I came across it once on a guides boat. We played catch and release until our arms were about to fall off. He called it Boiling reds or something like that. We had a box full of Fall trout, no interest in keeping a bull red at that point. Now I we had hit some SLOTS they would have gone in the box.

Every fall they heard up in the middle of the lake and destroy tackle, I don’t fool with them anymore.

Many times surf fishing Elmers. Kinda of scary being in the water actually. Not sure what would happen if you got in the middle of them.

Many times in Chandeluer sound, I usually avoid them.
