Going to try some national forest deer hunting in Illinois this year and was thinking about a handheld GPS to mark stand locations. Will use as a back on the boat in the summer. Want something that shows good detail.

Phone service is spotty in the area.

Suggestions?

I have a garmin GPS map handheld that I used once. I think it's a 610cs. If you want to borrow it to try it out, I never use it.

Just use a smartphone app. I just did a long hike in Colorado. My iPhone was just as accurate as my gps. Just download maps you need before you get out of cell coverage.

Yep, phone doesn't need cell coverage to work as GPS and maps can be accessed before hand.

You serious Clark?

I thought they had to have cell signal for the GPS to work.

Nope. 12 days in Colorado last month. Phone stayed on airplane mode. My mapping apps worked as good as Inreach GPS. I wouldn't carry the Inreach other than satellite texting.

Damn!

I'm leaving for CO tomorrow for 2 weeks to go elk hunting, but I've got a Garmin handheld with topo maps that I use.

Just downloaded the offline maps of the area on Google Maps and can use as a backup.

Thanks.

Thanks for the info. Going to try the phone in airplane mode around the house to see how accurate it is..

Give the app "Avenza Maps" a try. It is a PDF/gps overlay mapping app that lets you use a ton of free or really cheap PDF map files from the map store on your phone.

Basically allows you to see your position on a high detail topo/trail map. Way better trail/topo detail than google maps. Go to the store in app then either search (search button in top right corner ) available apps by name or via location map.

I've made maps on Caltopo and used with this app. Let's me customize trails and points I want. Also can use USGS maps.

Another vote for Avenza. They also have Avenza pro. If you happen to have GIS capabilities you can make your own maps

Allows you to take photos at your locations and take notes about the locations also.

MotionX and onXhunt are also an option for using your phone's GPS off the grid. You can save waypoints, record tracks, measure distance, elevation, share tracks, etc
