I tried to do a thread search but I was unlucky. I looked up the TSA rules for handguns in checked bags, but I was hoping to get some outdoor board advice on any unusual things I should be concerned about. Did any of you have irregular things happen when attempting to check firearms in their bags at the airport. How long should I expect the process to take once I declare my handgun? Any advice is appreciated! TIA!

Don't just check TSA rules. Check the state laws where you are flying to and even if you are flying through a connecting location.

People have been arrested in NY for following all of the TSA rules and for gun parts.

TSA agent makes it up as they go honestly.

You can fly if the handgun is locked in TSA approved container and ammo is secured separately, but doesn't mean they're going to allow it on or not give you crap about it.

Very true. The TSA rules only apply inside the airport and maybe not even then.

Avi Wolf faced similar charges when he tried to fly back home from New York City with an empty gun magazine that turned out to be legal in his home state of Georgia but not in New York. "Somebody could've done more damage to an individual with a fork from McDonald's than with that," Wolf told Stossel. "I'm telling them ‘just a notification, I have a magazine here. It's empty, there's no bullets, there's no gun powder. I called TSA before doing it and this is what they told me to do, to declare it.'"

FOPA has proven to be useless in airports and we gave up machine guns for that.

TSA is completely inconsistent on policies regarding flying with firearms. I've had everything from just opening the case, showing them the gun, then locking it up to having to go to a back room to having to check it then wait for TSA to approve at their security area for checked bags.

Just make sure it's in a hard case with good locks and you'll be fine.

Just FedEx it wherever you're going. Save yourself the aggravation.
