Hey guys, in the market for a handgun and will take the training course as well as open concealed carry license. 43 years old, not very knowledgeable on handguns. It’s mostly for self defense. It will be locked in a safe while at home. I looked at academy online and saw the Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 9mm Pistol Shield Defense Kit. Is this a good gun for what I’ll be using it for (hopefully I won’t use it at all). If not, you guys have any suggestions? This gun is $399 at academy. Thanks!

It's a fine handgun for the use you described. I'd make sure to hold/handle a few different brands of subcompacts just to make sure you like the ergonomics before buying though.

If you don't intend on conceal carrying it, get a full sized frame pistol for your first pistol. It will be easier to learn to handle. If one day you decide to conceal carry, buy a subcompact then.

So if someone crawls through your window at 2am you’re gonna go get it out of the safe?

You're going to need one of those "instant open" either code or biometric boxes for your bedside table.

The "ready" gun has to be loaded, one in the chamber or else you're just pretending to be ready to defend yourself.

It will be in a digital safe with one in chamber

But like others have said, first pistol get a full frame and learn to shoot that well.

Just because open carry is legal where you live, that doesn't make it a good idea.(I assume you're in Texas.) Unless you have some solid handgun retention training, open carry is a really terrible option. (It's still a bad option even with that kind of training.)

I agree with doliss and others - get a full-size pistol (M&P or Glock).

Electronic safes are hard to access if battery dies. Keep fresh ones in there.
