So my grandfather left an old shotgun from the 50’s. It is a double barrel with two triggers. Nothing special value wise but great memories. Which Gunsmith in Lafayette region would y’all recommend to fully restore it to original condition. The wood needs to be stripped and redone and there is minor rust pitting in the barrel. and receiver. It is all solid and no new parts are needed. Just a restirwtion of wood and steel back to original blueing and wood stain. Thanks in advance

I'd leave it.

Jake Welch (All American gunsmithing) use to reblue in Baton Rouge. I don't know many using tanks, everyone wants to spray paint on their guns these days.

I second leave it as is.
Your grandfather worked hard to get that patina.

I’m with the keep it as is guys.

My biggest regret today is not using a traditional wood rifle to deer hunt all these years. I have the shitty plastic stock rifles that I’ll definitely pass down to my kids…but they don’t have any old scars that show how much use they get. One of my most prized possessions is a pre 64 Winchester 94 in 32 special that my dad gave me. It’s beat all to hell and has had so much wd40 (I guess) put on it over the years that it seems to be impervious to rust.

I worked as a GS and put myself through college building and repairing guns. What make and model is stamped on the receiver and barrel ? Do you have a Lefever, JC Smith, Ithaca, or quite possibly a European made guild gun. Barrels are likely stamped Damascus steel, Black powder smokeless only. Speaking from experience, ditto others and “leave it as-is”. You have a wall hanger. Leave the finish and patina alone as you will only diminish the value. Hang it over your fireplace mantle and make it a conversation piece.
