My pop offered to put $350 towards a gun cabinet for me for christmas.
They have pretty decent pry-resistant(although this probably means "pry-able"), 10-18 gun, cabinets for around that price like:

My situation is I will probably be renting for another 2-3 years and move at least twice during that time frame. Moving a 300-400lb safe will be a big hassle and I'm not really worried about a fire. I can bolt this cabinet to a stud, in a closet.

Should I just not even spend this money at all and save it for later putting it towards a safe purchase?

I guess it comes down to, how many guns do you have? Are they worth anything? and What type of neighboorhood do you live in? If it's just a couple guns, they're not real prizes and you feel safe walking around at night, I'd save the money for a future purchase.

If you don't want to spend the money on a real safe then the stack on is a decent way to keep kids and honest people out of your stuff...

It won't protect against fire or a theif. Just be sure to keep a document with pics and serial numbers of your weapons in case of fire or they get stolen.

i got that same one at dicks for 150 right before christmas

i like it, and knew i wasn't getting anything fire proof, etc. for that price, but you can configure the inside however you like

i have half shelving and half guns, so it only holds 9, though tightly....the lock seems sturdy, but its probably more of a deterrent than anything

it does lock on 3 sides of the door panel

for the price, i think its a great deal...i was just trying to get the guns out of my kids reach since they are getting a little more curious

Buy the cheapest metal gun cabinet you can find. Stick it somewhere obvious. Throw some 2x4's inside the cabinet. hide yo guns elsewhere.

They have this one at our local Walmart and Sam's. It's $399, holds up to 14 guns and is much lighter than some of the other safes. Just remember that if it's lighter for you to move, it's lighter for the theives too!

I'm in the market also. I'm in need of one in the range of 20-25 long guns. What I have found is these seem to be the best in order, but they aren't cheap.
Cannon
Winchester
Browning
I'm hoping to find a used Browning or large Winchester for the right price. If not I may go with the Cannon which is nice and would be safe for where I'll be putting it. The average weight for what I'm looking at is 700lbs. Others are a lot lighter, but I'd rather move heavy than have someone else move light.

I have this one. It's small, but it's all I really had room for at the time. If you check academy every week or so they'll probably put it on sale for around 350-400

I see you live in Houston, check out acsafes.com. They are located in Houston and Dallas I think. Might help.

That seems like a decent/cheap one but it doesn't really meet my requirements right now. i.e. it weighs 370lbs

I'll be sure to do this. good advice.

I like this option. It seems like it's in the middle of the road between a safe and a cabinet as far as weight/security goes. They almost the exact one at academy, LINK, for 50 bucks cheaper and 40 lbs lighter.

Thanks for the help guys.

figured i'd update

bought it($380 out the door) and installed it last night, specs were about right
-3 dead bolts
-weighed about 140lbs, took 2 of us to move and install it
-pretty solid door
-unfortunately it only has 2 ground mounting holes, i think i'll drill one in the back or side to stud mount it as well
