Wanting to get a 444 so can hunt muzzle loader season. On a budget though, trying not to spend more than 250-300, preferably a not a lever action because there pro going to be more than that.

Does a 30-30 count for one of the calibers you can use during muzzle loader?

I think as long as it's a single shot exposed breach. .306 may be the smallest but I would check WL&F to make sure. I hunt in Ms so things a bit different there.

The gun has to be single shot, exposed hammer, and the patent has to be from before 1900, the caliber was anything above .38, ms has included 35 but I'm not to up to date on my la laws

With your budget you need to be looking at H&R handy rifles

I am 99% sure a .30-.30 isn't allowed for the new "primitive" weapon seasons.

For your budget you could easily get the real deal an actual "primitive weapon". Muzzle loaders these days are way inexpensive you can get everythign you need for under $200. Most of them shoot pretty well from what I have seen also.

Sorry I am just WAY against having a "primitive" weapon season and allowing scopes and cartriges. It's bad enough that an inline is considered a muzzleloader, but to me the other stuff is just going too far. Why do we even have a primitive weapon season anymore?

If you dont want a true muzzle loader, you cant go wrong with the H and R .45-70. I have killed 3 with mine and shot a nice buck at almost 200 yards in January. Runs less than 300 at Wal-Mart. Do yourself a favor and get the Hornady LeverRevolution ammo. Shoots a little flatter.

TC encore, for some reason is not an accepted design in La. Ms is another story.

It makes no sense, but a friend of mine has taken it as far as it can be taken and you can't hunt with the encore. This sucks, because it is a great platform, but it is what it is.

Fact is, none of this new crap is "primitive", but if that's what you want, get a bow. Rifle season has been moved up a week.

You can get an H&R in .30-30. Does that not count?

All I have is an old 30-30, but I don't hunt very often. If I were to get into hunting and wanted a primitive and regular season firearm, it would be the H&R .444. It shoot flatter than the .45-70 and will be more than enough distance for most hunting spots. Make sure you invest in good optics, I hear this thing kicks like mule.

It's all in the name of trying to attract more hunters. Numbers are dropping and the average age of hunters keeps going up. Allowing, muzzleloaders, crossbows, primitive firearms, etc is done with the hope of getting more people interested in hunting and also for collecting more license fees.

Yeah I know why they are doing it but call it something different. Call it early gun season or something with what they are doing it's just not primitive. I feel like it's an insult to hunter's inteligence to call muzzleloader season primitive anymore.

I'll stick to my flintlock and my hawken.

In that case, creating a special season that is limited to weapons that youngsters can't shoot seems stupid.

You need to get the youngsters into hunting if you want to increase your numbers.

I guess the point is, if you want more people involved in the hunting, then instead of adding new ways and new weapons why not just make gun season longer, and let a hunter use any firearm he or she likes. That way people that want to go hunting don't have to go out and buy a different gun to hunt with at a certain time.

Primtive season's are a joke these days with modern in-lines, modern rifle rounds, and modern optics.

Have an achery season and a longer general hunting season allowing any long gun that meets the states regulations is what I think needs to be done.
