I have a family member that's starting the PCT in a few weeks and was looking to get him something useful for the trip. We were thinking about a Garmin Inreach but he's borrowing one from a friend for the trip. Thinking of maybe a Garmin watch to pair with it. Anyone have any experience with Inreach/watch functionality? Any other idea/suggestions welcomed.

If he's starting the PCT in a few weeks he likely has all the equipment he needs. The primary focus is low weight. Best suggestion is a wad of cash (he'll need it) or a gift card tp REI or similar. He'll likely need a new pair of hiking shoes halfway through.

yeah if he doesn't have all his gear dialed in by now then he probably has some very specific things he wants to fill the holes.

Get a hold of his food drop schedule and ship him some booze.

I don't have personal experience with it, but a couple of the younger guys I work with really like the Garmin wearables. The top dog would be above that price range but the Instinct Solar would be a good purchase, and I can't imagine anything that would integrate with the Inreach better than another Garmin product.

LifeStraw Nalgene.

ETA: A downvote? It eliminates the need to carry or filter water.

I do a few extended backpacking or canoe camping trips each year. Not having to carry extra water or stop and filter is a huge plus.

If he doesn't have a good Jet Boil, that would be a very nice gift. Add in a couple of good pairs of wool socks, no cotton. Maybe an ultra lite rain jacket.

Like others said, he’s probably got all his gear already. Try to find out his plans as he hikes - no more than 2 or 3 days in advance - and try to pay for some hotel/hostel stays along the way. Lots of store credit at REI.

When he’s close to finishing, have some books about the Continental Divide Trail shipped to him.
