quote:

The team reached out to Michael Vecchione, a cephalopod expert at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, to confirm what they were seeing. The size and location of the sighting left only one other possible identification, Dr. Vecchione said: Asperoteuthis, a squid with much longer, thinner tentacles than the large ones, each with a flattened, sucker-covered club, that he saw on the video. This, he agreed, was a giant squid, Architeuthis, the famous colossus of literature.

It was only the second expedition to film a giant squid in its deepwater habitat, and the very first giant squid to be filmed in the waters of the United States. And here it was, only about 100 miles southwest of New Orleans, and within sight of the methane flaring at Appomattox, Shell’s largest floating oil-drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico. (Another video was made in 2015, of a giant squid near the surface of Japan’s Toyama Bay.)

I have a friend on the "Journey into Midnight" expedition...very cool stuff they find down at the depths. Look up Dante Fenolio on Facebook, he's sharing daily updates of their catch and finds.

Also the NOAA site here

If anything on this planet came from another world, it is the squid.

I saw a few shows about the Humboldt Squid that can grow up to 6 ft. and weigh as much as 110 lbs. that have been blamed in the deaths of many fishermen over the years. Truly scary creatures.

This. Pretty sure if something is going to take over the world, itll be the evolution of these things

ace i know you are a learned man
I want to recommend a book called “other minds” which delves deep into the history and philosophy of consciousness and intelligence focused specifically on cephalopods

I truly believe that there is a greater than 50% chance that the evolution of cephalopod intelligence paired with their unique in the world body type is extraterrestrial in origin.

Dr. Robinson, the director the Cape Eleuthera Institute in the Bahamas, had been watching the videos that Medusa recorded on its latest expedition

My daughter has been attending summer sessions at the The Island School at Cape Eleuthera Institute for 4 years now. If your kids have any interest in the sea, marine biology, or science in general, I highly recommend checking out their school and summer camps. My daughter has worked on studies that has allowed her to catch, tag, and document sharks, sting rays, sea turtles, and conch. Her knowledge of the ocean and her passion to become a marine biologist grows stronger each year.

Well I ordered the book. It's fun to get a book recommendation in an online forum and go to APrime to get it ordered. Delivery is scheduled for next Monday.

How deep do you think it gets?

For a quick and not necessarily reliable reference via Wikipedia:
GOM Average depth 5,299 feet
Maximum depth 14,388 feet
It's an ocean basin. While not open ocean deep, it is a pretty deep hole.

Probably pretty accurate. Here's a blurb from Dante's Facebook updates I mentioned above:

quote:

Notes from the Gulf of Mexico No14: We have been busy investigating the interface of the bathypelagic zone (a depth of 1,000 to 4,000 m / 3,300 to 13,100 feet) and steep cliff faces of the continental shelf.

I always found this kind of stuff fascinating. oceanography is something I always wanted to get into.

It’s even more interesting being practically right in our backyard.

And to think they share a phylum with snails and clams.

Or those giant jelly fish in the Indian Ocean.
Think of all the scary shite there must be in the deepest parts where it's pitch black.

The Giant Squid these guys recorded, Archiyeuthis dux, get much much bigger. The one they encountered this week was just a juvenile at 10 feet long. It's believed they can reach almost 60' long and weigh as much as a ton!

They are cephalopods (yes phylum mollusca). They go back to the Cambrian in the fossil record. That's over 500 million years ago. They didn't need to arrive here via aliens. They are fascinating as they are pretty damned smart and have that great looking pair of eyes.
