I'm about to build a new garden, approximately 20'x 65' with about 8 or 9 4'x12' raised beds

My question is on what to put down between the beds? I've thought about mulch, but I don't want to be reapplying mulch every 2 years.

Not sure how black weed barrier will look for aesthetics.

Don't really want to just leave the grass either...

And don't really want to drop the money for stone or pavers.

Anything else that I'm not thinking of?

I've used salvaged treated 2x8s to make a little walkway before. It held up over three years until I moved. Probably wouldn't be my go to solution for keeping the grass from coming up though.

If you make them deep enough, you shouldn't have an issue with weeds coming through

I'm building a 4'x8' one on Saturday. I'm going 18" high (3 - 2x6's)

On a related note, anyone know the best place to buy 450 cu. ft. of top soil?

mulch

If you have a place to stockpile it then you can get tree trimmers to dump their chipper loads for free. Tree chips of course are a poor choice for flower beds due to tying up nitrogen but it would work for walkways. Weeds will of course pop up here and there and will need to be sprayed or pulled.

A more expensive option would be to put down Weed fabric then crushed stone or washed gravel on top of that.
I guess you could also put fabric down before the mulch as well to cut down on number of weeds.

If it were me I'd just stick with grass for the time being and see how much trouble it is to keep it mowed/trimmed. I have one single 9x16 bed in my yard and don't mind trimming the perimeter of bed.

What are you using for bed sides? I was able to get my hands on some trailer house I-beams which works great for me.

Remember the taller you have your beds the faster they will dry out.

I collected cardboard, sprayed the grass between the beds and put down the cardboard then covered it with a deep layer of mulch. Uncompacked it was about 5" deep. The cardboard will prevent grass from coming up and will also help keep the mulch from rotting from the bottom as fast. Also, mulch is cheap.

I have crushed limestone. It's angular so it kinda packs down and doesn't bounce out like pea gravel, but still gives you that gravel look and feel when walking. I love it, but it will need occasional weeding. And at least in LC was not much more per scoop than mulch. That rock place on 28 should have it if it's still open.
