Garage/workshop cooling ideas

I use my attached double garage as my workshop for woodworking. Most of the time I can stand the heat, but lately it is just plain uncomfortable even with a nice box fan.
It has no windows. Has a double garage door.
I had an idea of buying a cheap window unit and placing it on a furniture dolly. When I go in there to do some work I would open the garage door two feet only and roll the unit into the space. Once done working I’d unplug it and store away. Am I crazy? Would this even work?
What have some of you baw’s done to cool off your workshop area?

Insulate your garage doors and run a duct into your garage.
I bought one of those portable units but you have to crack your garage door to vent it unless you want to cut a hole in your wall. Even with a 4 inch crack, pool noodles to block the gap and the unit cooling it’s still 90’s on the hot days.

those portable units
If you're talking about the kind that has the hose vent you stick out a window and the unit stay inside, those things are straight garbage. All the air they discharge out the vent hose must be replaced by air somewhere. That means either outside air or worse yet, attic air. The only time those things sorta work is when the outside air is decent but the inside air has been heated by the Sun or other sources other than the outside temp.

I have a good box fan and a dehumidifier in my shop, not cool but having the dry air is more comfortable than nothing but the fan. If if want to do more then I'm going to mount a small window unit high in the wall of my shop. Portable units just get in the way and you still have to vent them outside.

I went through a bunch of this at my old house. Suck it up and cut a hole in the wall and put a window unit. It's a life changer.

we did this in my friends garage and it worked. we insulated the door and sized the ac unit a little bigger than necessary and it worked.

I have a shop I was to cool as well but my issue is I can’t mount a window unit anywhere. It’s seperated from my main garage so it’s it’s own room. Back wall is exterior but that whole wall is covered by racks cabinets and workbench not to mention all the power lines for the house and gas main. The two side walls are either house on one side or another room in the garage. Back wall is the wall for the main garage.
I was going to look at those portable units and run the vent into the attic and then out the soffit since it’s right there. Do they really not work when setup like that?

You might could try an attic fan. Have it sucking through the space an into the attic. It would move quite a bit of air...
Itd still be hot air but better than one of those portable units.
Mini split is the way to go if you can.
Then windown unit.
Insulating your garage doors is paramount.

I use a big carpet drying fan in my shop. I was in there the other day building a mdf box, and didn't have it. I had to quit after five minutes, because the box was getting so wet. Got the fan, and I was good to go for another hour

unless you can afford one of these, buy a window unit and cut a hole in the wall. LINK
you dont want to tap into your house a/c, that never works well unless you buy a bigger a/c unit for the house, they dont have the "extra" capacity for you to just add another room like that

The portables will give up the ghost after a short time.
I had one in my garage. Insulated doors and a hole through the brick. It quit after a little over a year.
I'm temped to do a split unit.

Sounds like a mini split unit would work for you.

I doubt it. Those portable things really suck

I can’t second insulating the garage door enough. I have a window unit in my utility room and insulated the garage door. It was well worth the effort.

do you have a normal door out of the back of your garage? get another door and mount the window unit in to the door. when winter comes around take the a/c door off of the hinges and swap them out so it doesn't look bad

Insulate, and a split mini unit or for less money put a window unit in the wall which is what I have. At some point I am going to spring for the split mini I stay cool, but even in a shop have grown tired of the noise the window unit makes.

I never really looked at those mini split types. That would actually work quite well it seems in my situation. The wall that is the exterior of the house is the side of the house no one sees so having that eaterior unit there would be easy.
I want something that works well because this is the area where I work on a lot of different things and I’d like to get into re loading.
Anyone have opinions on a brand/size to look at? Shop area is 24’x 9’ x 9’. Any of them have iPhone control?
My garage doors are already insulated.
