Everyone is tested and negative for Covid-19, and Mobile is full of it, so looks like a good time to take a break and get out if town for a week or so. I am going to try to get in 2-3 days of fishing. Ideally I was thinking about 1 to 2 days offshore for Marlin etc and maybe a day for Roosterfish or something. I have no ideal what it’s like this time of year or right now so any advice appreciated

Subtle I’m rich thread. Who cares what’s biting if you can afford to go enjoy the pina coladas

We were in Cabo San Lucas back in January and it was my first time going there. Every day we were there we saw whales right off the beach. (And no I’m not talking about the women.)

Been seeing some mixed reports of marlin and tuna. I would think snapper and rooster would be best bet right now. Either way fish will be caught. Fish with Redrum and drink some beer with Chris and Luis after. Good times.

Yeah I am going to take a panga for the rooster, I guy just offered me a boat for 200 bucks. I just don’t want to troll all day and get skunked. (I have done that countless times here.)

No whales etc until November. If anyone has a guide to recommend or site you can see what’s really being caught, appreciate it. I know about all those fish season guide but no clue if they are accurate this year

You’re getting taken for a tourist boat ride in the panga for $200.

Take the advice, pay and hook up with RedRum.

I went a couple years ago and fished with lands end charter for Marlin. It just ended up being a boat ride. No action, whatsoever. It happens, even there. With all the recommendations for red rum I've seen all over the place and my experience with lands end, I would give red rum a call.

I still follow lands end on FB and I remember seeing them talk about the roosters being on fire right now.

Not sure what time of year it's peak, but the tip of baja peninsula is supposed to be some of the best tuna fishing on the planet. And do yourself a favor and dine at LINK /

The most incredible outdoor dining for fresh seafood overlooking gulf of california.

Fished with Redrum a number of years ago. Had a great time. Best part was that the tuna and mani that we caught were sent directly over to a restaurant that they are hooked up with. Got to dinner, had a few drinks, and had a lazy Susan with dolphin cooked 5-6 different ways. Was awesome.

The shady part is that they take your fish behind a wall to clean them. You know damn well that they are keeping as much as they are sending back with you (whether it be sending home for you or to the restaurant).

Now that was maybe 10 years ago....they were still building the casino in the marina back then. Things may be very different.

I've been to Cabo once before for vacation and had a blast.

I enjoy fishing but have only fished locally for bass and a few redfish trips.

The idea of fishing for Tuna/Marlin etc from Cabo seems awesome- but would I be out of my league as a first timer going fishing in Cabo? I'm not a moron but I don't really know my way around a boat, especially offshore. Just wondering if it would be worth it to go with an outfit like RedRum for a first timer.

Call Redrum or Tag Cabo Sportfishing but just a heads up the fishing is very hit or miss in Cabo. You may skunk one day and smoke them the next. We only completely skunked one day. The other 3 days we caught a mix of mahi, tuna, and marlin. We went early September.

Blues and Blacks will be great this time of year. Boats will be tight though, COVID may help.

There is a very good Wahoo bite in the area in the Summer. It ain't, in my experience, anything like the Bahamas or Bermuda this time of year, but there ain't a Wahoo bite anywhere on earth that can equal the West Bank of the Bahamas this time of year (or anytime of year) in my experience.

Yellowfin will also be present in large numbers. Can be GREAT this time of year.

Striped Marlin and Sailfish will also be around but they won't be as thick as they can be....but they are always around. Sails will be BIG...Pacific Sails are generally bigger than Atlantic and Gulf Sails anyway but they will be even more so this time of year.

Rossters are always available. I don't know if there is a better time for them or not....they are always around and always hungry, just as all Jacks are all the time.

Bottom fishing is the same. It is always good.

The biggest hurdle this time of year would normally be the availability of boats. This is probably not a problem this year with COVID. If you haven't already made plans try to be there during a new moon. If the moon is full bait will be scarce and so will the fish. Nothing can ruin offshore fishing, in my experience, than going on the wrong moon. It may just be superstition on my part but I have found offshore fishing very tough on a full moon. In a normal year if you didn't make reservations last year for this year on a new moon you probably couldn't get a boat. Pangas and local market fishermen would be your best option normally if this were the case.

Pangas are not as common or as cheap as they used to be in Cabo but it is still possible to get a boat reasonably priced....the problem is that you will need tackle and they will want to drag dead baits. It will work but live baits slow trolled are much better and very few Pangas have any way to keep baits live. Some Panga fishermen will have tackle and it will vary in quality. This is my preferred method of fishing in most of Mexico because it is much cheaper and it is more like fishing on your own....especially if the Panga has a bait tank. I carry a bilge pump and hoses and have been able to talk a local into finding a suitable barrell / bucket and have been able to fish live bait in Mexico but most of them won't bother with it because it is more work. A sack full of sabikis (Japanese for "I can't throw a cast net) and a plastic drum, bilge pump and 2 lengths of hoses and you will catch way more fish. I convinced almost the entire Panga fleet in Ixtapa of this about 20 years ago LOL...I had the stuff to build a bait tank with me, the young kid I was fishing with was open to the idea and had access to a barrell...and we wore the Sails OUT! The next year almost every Panga in Ixtapa was slow trolling live baits! I tried to convince the same kid that kite fishing was also very productive but I was never able to get conditions right when I had the stuff with me. We tried a couple of times but couldn't keep the Mackeral and Dolphin off the baits long enough for the Sails to have a shot. Too much work to catch dolphin and mackeral.

Unfortunately even charter boats with excellent reputations in Cabo will mail it in and drag dead baits or old frozen baits if you ain't a regular customer. This is true in ALL sport fishing fleets...if you ain't booking several trips a year and not doing so years in advance they aren't overly concerned with repeat business. Its the regular customer who has proven to book several times a year several years in advance that keep those big expensive boats operating...if you ain't in that group you are likely to not get their best effort...especially if you haven't got a lot of experience offshore. The most important minutes of the trip will be the first few times you speak to the mate. If they know what they are doing they will know within a few minutes what level of experience you have on a boat and their actions will tell the captain what kind of customer they have aboard. Bragging about years of experience is proof that the customer is a jerk most likely but offering to help rig and just being in the cockpit asking questions and being involved in the minutiae is where the connection is made. Ask about the baits....what time they had to get up to make bait is always a GREAT question...if they are going to make bait on the way offshore absolutely be involved in the process …. Sitting in the cabin drinking or puking over the transom is very indicative of what kind of fisherman they have and they will act accordingly. if it is a multi day trip start cleaning up the boat on the way back to the hill...ask the mate where the mop is....it will make a helluva difference in their efforts. When someone gets on the boat, starts bragging about the number of huge fish they have caught, from the cabin with a drink in hand, mates know who you are and their actions will tell the captain.
